The next edition of this event will take place between the 6th and the 8th of February of 2018 at London’s Business Design Centre. One of this year’s edition spotlights is Creativity in Colour, but what does this mean? Let’s find out!
Do you want us to share a universal truth? Colour brings the world joy and passion! Isn’t it true? The fact is that colour is an important piece of our life and, obviously, is a fundamental part of the design world. You’ll be glad to hear that colour will be an important part of the Surface Design Show 2018 and, at the event, you’ll be able to find some brands that have innovative designs that celebrate the joy of colour.
One of those designers is Dimitri Bähler that, in collaboration with Maurizio Tittarelli Rubboli, has recently perfected an innovative technique to apply colour to ceramics. The basis of this technique originated in the Middle East in the 15th Century, but Bähler perfected and with her help created some astonishing pieces with amazing chromatic effects.

These pieces are part of the collection named Irisdescent that experiments with that ancient lustre technique set in polychrome ceramic. You should keep in mind that these pieces are pretty unique because that technique requires great skill and dexterity and only a few ateliers have been able to master it.
For a more elegant feel, you should pay attention to the Cyanometer, a recent light fixture application by Marjan van Aubel’s. In collaboration with Swarovski, van Aubel’s created a powerful light installation that gives the amazing sensation of bringing light indoors using crystals to make solar cells more efficient.
The effect produced by this light installation is amazing and full of colour thanks to the effects produced by the Swarovski Crystals. It’s also a great example of how light fixtures can adapt to new high tech products and help the environment.
The final great example we have to show you is produced by Studio Meike Harde. The Wooden Aquarelle is the product result of a material study conducted by this famous design studio that focused on the mass production of individual wood pieces.

That study allowed them to develop a technique where the wood is coloured by adding liquid pigments which soaks into the surface, creating an autonomous response. This method produces decorated wooden sheets which can be used in various ways such as a base material for furniture, wall panels, or floor tiles. The result’s some stunning and unique wood pieces full of different colours. A true example of colour creativity at Surface Design Show 2018.
