The Ultimate Highlights of Art Basel Miami Beach 2016Monday 12 December 2016
Art Basel Miami Beach 2016 was a success, as always, and it left in the air very interesting ideas to inspire you and to help you to begin the New Year with new ideas, new projects, and new partnerships. At least 2016,000 people visited last week Art Basel in Miami Beach 2016, a contemporary trade show that is the year’s last art-buying opportunity.
Apart from the traditional Galleries, Art Basel provides its guests with six sectors, which are spread all over the park to satisfy all levels and types of artistic interest. Unsurprisingly, a significant part of serious collectors still considers Galleries as the main and most important event.
We cannot talk about Art Basel 2016 without talking about the Nova sector, which presents 35 galleries by mainly three artists. The Positions sector that is considered the event’s main platform to expose new talent and the Survey sector, which presents a large collection of historical-based projects. The so beloved Kabinett sector highlighted 29 carefully curated exhibitions within booths across the fair.
The Director and Chief Curator of Public Art Fund, Nicholas Baume, returned for his last participation as the director Public Sector, presenting over 20 site-specific works at Collins Park, including outdoor sculptures and installations, which are composed of street art, murals, and graffiti.
The next year’s Public sector will be curated by Philipp Kaiser, an independent curator and critic.
The Beijing-based artist Sun Xun surprised everyone with a large-scale multimedia installation called “Reconstruction of the Universe”, which has the form of a wave and is made of metal and bamboo. The structure is a piece of art by itself and according to Xun, it is the answer for the questions: “What is the world and what was the beginning of the world?”
The fair was also marked by the announcement of the next shortlist of the BMW Art Journey: Max Hooper Schneider, Maggie Lee and Beto Shwafaty.
