The partnership of Howard Hirsch and Michael Bedner began when Howard hired Michael as an entry-level blueprint drafter. They soon founded the company in 1965, becoming one of the first companies to market themselves as a hospitality design firm. Initially focusing their work on projects local to the United States, HBA began work on the Beverly Rodeo Hotel in Beverly Hills and Chez Voltaire, a restaurant in Florida. Over time, HBA expanded its work internationally, establishing an office in Hong Kong and later an office in London.

The gallery relies on the partnership of friends Julien Lombrail & Loic Le Gaillard. They first opened a space in London’s Chelsea in 2006 in a former carpenter’s workshop; which was followed with a second space in Mayfair in 2008.

The United States is a country that has a huge and rich tradition with craftsmanship. It is often said that America was built on steel, and that should be believed. The American people rely a lot on the middle class, blue-coloured jobs for the maintenance of the society and the economy. And that reflects a lot on the design world. It is very rare the interior designer in America who doesn’t work with carpenters, blacksmiths and all the other ancient arts.

In 2009, Tadd Myers was on a commercial job in which he photographed craftsmen who worked on mouldings for historic buildings. Their tremendous skill and devotion inspired him to launch a lengthy, cross-country journey photographing men and women who make their living producing handmade goods.

The resulting book, Portraits of the American Craftsman, released in 2013, features photographs of 30 workshops across the U.S., from grand piano builders in New York City to baseball glove makers in Texas. The crafts industry occupies a big piece of the American economy, and that it’s what keeps it safe from the hazards of technology.
