Since 1924, the Huka Lodge has been consistently ranked as the best hospitality services in all New Zealand and Australia and the third best in the world. The award-winning retreat has a premier reputation due to its sophisticated style and welcoming services. With over 90 years of history, the hotel used to be renowned for its trout fishing and attracted many important people, such as HM Queen Elizabeth, James A. Mitchener, and Charles Lindbergh. While in the past, the conditions were rather austere, the hotel has developed drastically into a world-class luxury reference, however, its hospitality essence has never changed.
Within 17-acres of magnificently manicured grounds, accommodation is available with just 25 suites. All rooms are nestled along the banks of the magnificent Waikato River, upstream from the mighty Huka Falls. Offering accommodation within 18 Junior Lodge Suites, one Lodge Suite, the four-bedroom Owner’s Cottage and the two-bedroom Alan Pye Cottage – guests luxuriate in an exclusive hospitality experience.
The Alan Pye Cottage provides mesmerising views over lush rolling green lawns and manicured gardens on the banks of the Waikato River. Materials like cedar, heart timbers, stone, and brick were used in the architecture and design of the contemporary re-interpreted cottage drawing elements from the 1920s and 1930s while having a strong influence and a sense of elegance from the English Arts & Crafts Movement.

The Deep turquoise green waters of the Waikato River further affirms the beauty of this astonishing retreat. Cuisine continues to define the iconic nature of the hospitality experience at Huka Lodge. Presently, the lodge is under the cooking expertise of British Chef, Paul Froggatt. The tradition of generous and fine hospitality is deeply embedded within the Huka Lodge philosophy. Characterised by a dimmer and social atmosphere, guests are encouraged to gather and make each other’s acquaintance, share stories of their day and enjoy superb cuisine, prepared using the finest of ingredients and complemented by exceptional wines. Service is both solicitous and seamless, designed to anticipate and exceed expectations leaving one craving for so much more. One of the main dishes served at this fine dining venue is the Southland Lamb, loin roasted in mustard pesto and neck glazed with romanesco organic lemon purée and wild garlic.
In regards to the design of the lodge, New Zealand-born interior designer, Virginia Fisher was responsible for the majestic interiors after being commissioned by Alex van Heeren in 1984. Drawing on the property’s heritage, she created an interior and ambience considered unrivalled to this day. In late 2008, Fisher completed the exclusive Alan Pye Cottage, for Huka Lodge. A contemporary version of an Arts and Crafts cottage within a magnificent location, with superb colour palette and a fabulously eclectic interior. Named after the charming Irishman who founded Huka Lodge in 1924, the Alan Pye Cottage provides a fitting tribute to the original owner’s generous spirit of hospitality and his style.
