Design Miami/Basel 2019 is almost here! The event the global forum for design. Each fair brings together the most influential collectors, gallerists, designers, curators and critics from around the world in celebration of design culture and commerce. Occurring alongside the Art Basel fairs in Miami, USA each December and Basel, Switzerland each June, Design Miami/ has become the premier venue for collecting, exhibiting, discussing and creating collectable design. The upcoming event that will bring the very best of many art galleries and other design areas throughout Basel, Switzerland, will take place from June 11-16 at Messe Basel. CovetED brings everything you must know about one of the biggest design events of the season.
Miami is definitely the best setting for high-end exhibitions of 20th and 21st-century furniture, as well as for creating open spaces for discussions (through panel discussions and seminars) and the creation of amazing design pieces, collaborations between designers and institutions. There will even be many events organized by the main names the world of design, architecture, art, and fashion.
On June 11th at Messe Basel, Halle 1.1, Messeplatz, the event will begin with a full seven days of celebration and awareness of modern and contemporary design. Aric Chen is the Curatorial Director of this edition, and he stated that: “I am thrilled to join Design Miami/ and bring a new and different perspective to the fair. Design Miami/’s unparalleled position in the design world as a platform for innovation, education, and philanthropy is something I look forward to being a part of”.
Two of the main highlights that all visitors will be able to see are related to Galleries sector (focused on design pieces starting from the Modernism to the present day) and the Curio sector (which will present immersive installations with an emphasis on scientific and technological research, handcraft and creative production). A total of 41 galleries from 12 countries are set to be showcased in this design event.
Like every year, the 2019 edition of this event will celebrate the winners of the Swarovski of the Future Award. Through this competition, young emerging designers that will be presenting new concepts of the design’s future in three main categories: ‘Architectural Surfaces and Building Materials’, ‘Home Decor’ and ‘Lighting’. The three winners have been announced: Juju Wang, Studio Klarenbeek & Dros and Raffe Burrell.
Shanghai-born installation artist Juju Wang will work in synergy with Swarovski on kinetic architectural facades and the use of water to reach calmness and depth; Studio Klarenbeek & Dros will present 3D printed crystal objects to emulate the reduction of the Arctic icecaps, due to global warming; Raffe Burrell, instead, will showcase lighting pieces inspired by waterfalls in the Tyrolean mountains, where the Swarovski’s historical headquarters are.
Of course, there will also be a couple of artists and art galleries which will be setting their presence in the main event. Among them, we can include Friedman Benda, which will be introducing Bleached II by Israeli designer Erez Nevi Pana, a piece made through the use of highly saline water of an industrial evaporation pond to submerge the aluminium structure of his furniture design. Then we also point to Nilufar Gallery, founded in Milan by Nina Yashar, and set to be in Miami to present the work of names such as Franco Albini, Gio Ponti, Studio BBPR, Joaquim Tenreiro and, Jonathan Trayte. The focal point of this showcase will be the presence of the iconic Triennale armchair by Gio Ponti (first revealed to the public in 1951).
Design at Large is another sector of the event which will be exploring a topic of incommensurable value, chosen by the event. On this 14th edition, it will be about “Elements: Earth”. It will be a large-scale installation that will intend to describe how humans and design will keep interacting in a post-nature Anthropocene future.
