The trees are turning and the weather’s getting cooler. Halloween is drawing near but you’re probably already too old for a simple trick or treat night, right? CovetED decided it’s about time to take you to the next level and turn you into a true Halloweener. Pack your bags: especially for you, we’ve prepared a Top-10 list of spooky Airbnbs around the world. Spooky Airbnbs? Yes, you’ve heard us. You can actually rent these houses. Are you brave enough?
– Augill Castle: Cumbria, UK –
Built in 1841 as a Victorian gentlemen’s folly, Augill Castle has been described as unlike anywhere you have ever stayed before. This “folly” definition may be a code for a “secret murder lair” or “ghost central”. The castle has gothic windows, battlements, turrets, stained glass, oak panelling, towers, secret doorways, rambling corridors and a secret garden to explore. With 15 grand rooms prepared to be rented separately, the place could be called an extravagant combination of boutique hotel and eccentric country house. Do you want the castle all to yourself? Hire the family castle exclusively and fully catered for your own spooky party.
– Highlands Mansion: Denver, CO –
Named after Valentine, the daughter of Lumber Baron, who built the house, Highlands Mansion is a 1-bedroom residence in Denver, Colorado. “Paranormal fans” have routinely voted this mansion in Denver to have one of the most haunted rooms in America. The mansion was the location of the death of two children back in 1970 – a crime still unsolved – and now organizes Murder Mystery Dinners in the weekends!
– Castle Chateau Pitau: Russia –
Russia can sometimes be misunderstood as a scary country. But Castle Chateau Pitau is definitely a place where you may have trouble sleeping. The small castle may appear quite normal at first: 3 bedrooms, a recreation room and disco hall, a wooden sauna, a huge garden with several swimming pools… But be careful: the ghost of the castle appears weekly at midnight! Don’t you go running into the dark forest in the back of the castle!
– The Rustic Carriage House: Charleston, SC –
As Chateau Pitau, The Rustic Carriage House is apparently a building that shouldn’t be included in the spooky Airbnbs list. Originally a carriage house, circa 1788, it allows the exploration of the beautiful Charleston homes South of Broad, go shopping on the illustrious King Street, or indulge in some world-renowned restaurants and bars within walking distance. But for some reason, Charleston is one of the most haunted places in America. One of the ghosts in this place has been described as a “headless torso” that isn’t very friendly! Who would?
– Headfort House: Meath, Ireland –
If you’re travelling with a large group, Headfort House is a great choice, housing up to 60 people. A private preparatory school, it comprises a ballroom, large sports fields (for rugby, football, hockey), tennis courts, swimming pool, cricket crease, stables, squash court and a small theatre (complete with lighting and sound system). You’ll have plenty of space to run around once you log in your computer (free wi-fi included) and find out several online reports that say that the huge school is haunted!

– Goose Rocks Light: North Haven, ME –
Fox Island Thorofare is home to Goose Rocks Light, a Victorian lighthouse from the 1960s. The only access is by boat, but the host offers to take you there. Described by the owners as an eco-tourism destination or a romantic getaway, there is no registry of ghosts around, so you might be thinking why did this “house” enter the top spooky Airbnbs list. But what could be scarier than being alone in an old lighthouse, surrounded by water, rain, heavy fog and no one in miles?
– Hackett Castle: Tipperary, Ireland –
Hackett Castle is a 15th century fortified tower house. Originally added to the existing castle of 1220, it was built in 1480 to provide the Hackett family with a safe and private accommodation apart from the older castle. Warm and comfortable these days, it has all the commodities for you to spend the night. But it also has a dungeon! Will you be able to sleep while imagining the screams and the atrocities that went down during the feudal time period?
– Captain Grant’s: Poquetanuck, CT –
TV and private bathroom in each room, a jetted tub, a rec room with a 1907 pool table and poker table, full gourmet kitchen, fireplace, outdoor grill… Captain Grant’s is a fully furnished home on five acres of lawn, located in a historic area near the centre of the Mystic Coast and country area of Connecticut. Seems quite nice, huh? Did we forget to mention that it’s situated between two cemeteries and famous amongst ghost hunters?
– David Stewart Farm: Gettysburg, PA –
The David Stewart Farm, located in historic Gettysburg, was used as a civil war field hospital immediately after the Battle of Gettysburg. Part of the house is divided with the host and his pets. His Airbnb house description tells something you must definitely know before renting this house: “I will be your only living host, but there are many others who reside with me. They have lived at the farm for many, many years, some for hundreds of years. Yes, the house is haunted, but they are all friendly! I have been here for 36 years and have lots of interesting stories that I’d be happy to share with you if you are interested”.
– Parks-Bowman Mansion: New Orleans, LA –
Located in the heart of the Garden District, the Parks-Bowman Mansion is a classic example of the good life in New Orleans, with its nice swimming pool. Shaded by palm trees and a live oak, the deep porches on all three levels tempt you to rest and relax. The Red Room and The Library are two of the rooms available for rental but another room called our attention: the Haunted Bedroom. “Don’t worry, our ghost (a young girl in a yellow dress from the 1890s) is very shy; you probably won’t see her, although some people swear she exists!”, Adrienne Parks (host) says.
