The host of the Games is Pyeongchang. This city is one of the main urban points of South Korea and is located just about 125 Kilometers east of Seoul, but it’s closest to the controversial Demilitarized Zone that separated North and South Korea, one of the most dangerous places on Earth.
This will be the second Olympic Games held in South Korea, but the first Winter Olympic Games. This event recently gave rise to the opportunity to promote a historic approximation between the South and North Koreas that are in a state of war since the 60’s. North Korea has agreed to send a delegation of athletes, as well as a cheering squad and a performance-art troupe. It will be the first time North Korea has participated in the Winter Games in eight years. It will also be the first time that North Korea participates in a major event in South Korea, since the country boycotted the 1988 Olimpic Summer Games in Seoul, South Korea.
The Opening and Closing Ceremonies are always highlights of any Games and both of them will be housed at PyeongChang Olympic Stadium, a temporary structure with capacity for 35,000 spectators. As we are writing this article, the Opening Ceremony already took place and, as expected, it was an astonishing event that served as the right fit for this Winter Games!
Created by designer Lee Suk-woo, the medals for these Winter Games feature dynamic diagonal lines and three-dimensional consonants from the Korean alphabet that stretch across the face, according to the official website. They’ve been crafted with a texture to resemble tree trunks, symbolizing the work that has gone into developing Korean culture and the Games themselves. They look great, but keep in mind that since the first Olympic Games that the Gold Medals aren’t made from actual Gold, so their economic value is quite low!
And who is the mascot? The 2018 Winter Olympic Games Mascot is a white tiger named Soohorang. As you know the tiger is closely associated with Asian and Korean mythology and culture, but in Korea has a stronger meaning because is considered a familiar figure in Korean folk tales as a symbol of trust, strength, and protection. With features that resemble the popular Anime shows, we can say that Soohorang fits perfectly in these Games.
The Olympic Games are always an important source of sports fashion. In every edition of Winter and Summer Games, all the participating countries exhibit a uniform that usually sets trends for the upcoming months in terms of colors and styles! For Pyeongchang the Team United States, for instance, will be wearing uniforms design by luxury fashion brand Ralph Lauren. The patriotic uniforms include a red, white and blue parka, which comes with adjustable heaters! Team USA uniforms also include a wool sweater, jeans, belt, beanie, suede gloves and boots.
One of the fashion highlights will be Chinese sportswear brand PEAK that designed the uniforms for six National Teams: Brazil, Slovenia, New Zealand, Iceland, Ukraine and Romania. The German National Team, one of the main favorites to Top the Medal Bank this year, will be wearing uniforms made by DOSB that highlight the White and Grey colors.
After South Korea, the Winter Games will move to Beijing in 2022. The truth is that Asia is in vogue in terms of hosting the Olympic Games. It’s important to remember that Beijing hosted the Summer Games and 2008 and that the next Summer Games will be held in Tokyo in 2020!
So don’t miss this year’s Winter Olympic Games. Even though they are not as popular as the Summer Olympics, they are an important celebration of peace, sportsmanship and competition! In total, these Games will feature 102 events in fifteen sports disciplines, including the addition of big air snowboarding, mass start speed skating, mixed doubles curling, and mixed team alpine skiing to the Winter Olympic Programme. A total of 2,952 athletes from 92 National Olympic Committees will compete, including the debut of Ecuador, Eritrea, Kosovo, Malaysia, Nigeria and Singapore. Even though Russia was banned due to dopping concerts, many Russian athletes will compete independently!
