The Ultimate Guide Of Portugal’s Michelin Star Restaurants For 2019 ⇒ The Iberic Michelin Guide gala awarded Portugal with 3 new Michelin Star restaurants and upgraded just one to the 2-Michelin star status. Portugal longs for a 3-star recognition that still wasn’t fulfilled. From the North to the South and Islands, Portugal is full of exquisite cuisine that longs to be experienced. Here is the full list of all 26 restaurants granted the coveted star!
Alma – Lisbon
Alma is located in Chiado, at the heart of Lisbon, and is the only Portuguese restaurant that was upgraded to a 2-Michelin star status. Chef Henrique Sá Pessoa defines his cooking with just one word: flavour. At the base of his philosophy is a combination of several influences, from Portuguese traditional cuisine to his travelling all around the world and his passion for Asia.
Belcanto – Lisbon
Awarded with two stars of the Michelin guide, Belcanto first opened its doors in 1958 in Chiado. Its privileged location in Lisbon’s historic centre, the discreet service and its refined cuisine, quickly conquered the elites of the Portuguese capital. Belcanto, by the hand of chef José Avillez, re-opened in 2012, with a completely new face. In that same year, the restaurant was awarded a star of the Michelin guide and, in 2014, gained its second one, being the first restaurant in Lisbon with this incredibly high distinction.
Il Gallo d’Oro – Funchal
Since 2004 that the kitchen is under the meticulous care of the talented French Chef Benoît Sinthon. Back in 2009, Il Gallo d’Oro received its first Michelin star, curiously being also the first one awarded on the island of Madeira, a reward that it sees renewed consecutively until 2017, the year in which it is distinguished with two Michelin stars, which maintains for 2019.
Ocean – Porches
Located at the Vila Vita Parc in Algarve, the mesmerizing Michelin-starred restaurant, Ocean is simply divine. The mouth-watering and seasonal menus are prepared by Austrian Executive Chef, Hans Neuner. Freshly-caught seafood is one of the main specialities of the restaurant while organically-raised meat from the resort’s own farm also seems to steal the show.
The Yeatman – Vila Nova de Gaia
The extraordinary panorama of the Douro River and the Historic Center of Porto guarantees a unique setting, coupled with the attribution of two Michelin stars in the 2017 Guide. Providing a unique wine and gastronomic experience, The Yeatman introduces you to a kitchen of imagination, in which the flavours of the Portuguese traditional cuisine are reinterpreted and presented in a contemporary style. It presents the enormous variety of fish and fresh ingredients, as well as the diversity of regional gastronomic specialities.
Vila Joya – Galé Beach
Occupying a place of excellence in the world of gastronomy (22nd place in the World Best 50 Restaurants), Vila Joya stands as one of the greatest bastions of the Portuguese gastronomic itinerary. The main responsible for Vila Joya’s success is the Austrian Chef Dieter Koschina, who combines local products with North European cooking techniques, bringing together one of the best views in Portugal and two Michelin stars. Carefully set in a Moorish-style villa, Vila Joya restaurant immediately enchants those who enter, with its architecture and decoration well curated and a friendly and warm reception.
A Cozinha – Guimarães
One of the new additions to the list, A Cozinha presents a new concept, where creativity and tradition meet to stimulate the senses. Dancing at the rhythm of the seasons and in sync with nature, it features local products, combining the sophistication of haute cuisine with the simplicity of traditional cooking.
Antiqvvm – Porto
Dating back to the 19th century, with all the inaccuracies that time has brought, Quinta da Macieirinha is now in a new configuration thanks to Antiqvvm. A space where you can not only count on the monumental beauty of the building and the gardens surrounding it, but also with a privileged and unique landscape in the Invicta city. To all this, add a masterful kitchen – by the excellent hand of Chef Vitor Matos – and a wine list not less enviable.
Bon Bon – Carvoeiro
Bon Bon is a unique restaurant on the Algarve Coast. This incredible restaurant has an attentive staff, ready to serve all kinds of needs of its customers. If you have any type of food conditioning, the staff will call you before the day of the reservation, to confirm the same data, to prepare an exclusive menu thought to the detail.
Casa de Chá da Boa Nova – Leça da Palmeira
The Casa de Chá da Boa Nova goes beyond a mere restaurant. As we enter the space, we realize the majesty of the Atlantic Ocean, which almost transports us to the time of the Discoveries. Chef Rui Paula has an unorthodox way of surprising his clients, taking them to another level of gastronomic experiences, in a symbiotic vision where he really wants to make himself known. The result of the architectural genius of the great Alvaro Siza Vieira, the property is one of the most emblematic works of the renowned architect.
Eleven – Lisbon
The restaurant is located in the heart of Lisbon’s business district, overlooking the entire city and surrounded by lavishing gardens. Way more than a simple restaurant, Eleven is a place of culture and art, both at the table and beyond it. The architecture of the purposely-built building is modern, minimalist and organic, using natural materials like wood and decorative stones, and boasting enormous glass windows that open towards Lisbon and the river Tejo.
Feitoria – Lisbon
Located at Altis Belém Hotel & Spa, Feitoria provides an experience that goes a simple dinner. With a vision centred on the origin of the product, the whole Feitoria experience revolves around a huge respect for Product and Matter.
Fortaleza do Guincho – Cascais
With a philosophy firmly based on the best practices of haute cuisine, Fortaleza do Guincho draws a huge inspiration in the lavishing Atlantic Ocean, its unique backdrop. The fresh fish and seafood from the Portuguese coast, as well as the best local products, are a constant at Guincho’s table, and they are constantly honoured and recreated in every single dish. Each season, their amazingly cooked dishes collect an enormous recognition of both national and international critique.
G Restaurant – Bragança
Another new member, G Restaurant is part of São Bartolomeu Historic Hotel and is the first in the region to make it on the list. Chef Óscar learned the basis of traditional cooking from his mother and developed his skills with the help of Chef João Rodrigues, of Feitoria restaurant and Vincent Farges, Epur’s current chef.
Gusto by Heinz Beck – Almancil
Located in the Conrad Hotel, in Algarve, Gusto restaurant provides an authentic gourmet experience, due to the culinary expertise of the award-winning Michelin-starred European chef, Heinz Beck. The menu Mediterranean classic with a modern twist. The interiors follow this style while also adding the avant-garde design from Scandinavian design, classic, suffering some more modern influences. Spaghetti alla Chitarra and Sea Bass in salmon mass, black truffles, cauliflower and dates are some of the most favourite dishes among visitors.
Henrique Leis – Almancil
Henrique Leis is a restaurant of excellence, awarded with a star of the Michelin Guide, and it’s located in Loulé, on the Algarve coastal region. The rustically beautiful restaurant features a unique wine list, which has the best references from Portugal and the World. The restaurant has two rooms: the winter room, which has warm colours and a fireplace, and the summer room, which has a bright and fresh colouring that extends outside, where the terrace is.
LAB by Sergi Arola – Sintra
LAB by Sergi Arola provides an elegant cuisine with three different tasting menus as well as à la carte options. The restaurant also offers 550 wines from around the world, exclusive Cognac and Armagnac selections and a tea menu with 40 different varieties.
L’ And – Montemor-o-Novo
L’And restaurant is located inside L’And Vineyards. Its main concept is to showcase a new Portuguese gastronomic culture, which values the history and culture of the country. L’And seeks to integrate the exotic and tropical ingredients as well as experiences subsequent from the Discoveries in the East. By collaborating with local producers, the restaurant features in its dishes some of the most seasonal ingredients. These are then enhanced by the expert chef, Miguel Laffan, that adds a contemporary touch to them.
Largo do Paço – Amarante
Just a few minutes away from Porto and the Douro River, the 1 Michelin starred restaurant has a refined and welcoming atmosphere and a dedicated team of professionals. At lunch, you can enjoy the day to day cuisine, the thrilling flavours of the region, the fresh products from the land and sea, which beautifully compose the Portuguese gastronomy. Their menus change seasonally to incorporate the freshest and most organic products available on the market.
Loco – Lisbon
The LOCO nomenclature means in place, which for chef Alexandre Silva, is in the kitchen. A space even greater than the restaurant room, the Chef is lost in the midst of his creations, his philosophies and, above all, his ideas. With a fine dining concept, the author’s cuisine, LOCO is much more than a restaurant, with a gastronomic proposal that goes far beyond a meal. LOCO is an organic project that values national products and nature.
Midori – Sintra
The last of the additions, Midori, an haute cuisine Japanese restaurant, is the first Asian-inspired restaurant in Portugal to receive a Michelin star. Created in honour of four Japanese princes that lived in Portugal and renovated in 2012, it embodies modern times with several menus of fusion cuisine and a stamp of approval that’s above average.
Pedro Lemos – Porto
Opening its doors in 2009, Pedro Lemos is seen as one of the best restaurants in the city. After five years of activity, the restaurant became the first establishment in Porto to be awarded a Michelin star. It is located in a beautiful house classified as architectural heritage, in Foz do Douro. Pedro Lemos honours nature, products and seasonality. A visit to this restaurant would not be completed without experiencing its extraordinary wines.
São Gabriel – Almancil
Characterised by a strong tendency for seafood, the São Gabriel fine dining restaurant provides the best traditional dishes from Portugal. The scrumptious meals are mainly filled with flavours from Algarve, with an innovative and daring touch, which was one of the many reasons why this extraordinary restaurant was given a Michelin star. For Chef Leonel Pereira, the most important aspect is to create dishes that show tradition, freshness, innovation, but, above all, flavour, which must be present in every detail of the dish.
Vista – Portimão
Located at the Bela Vista Hotel and surrounded by a breathtaking scenery, the Vista restaurant is led by Chef João Oliveira, whose kitchen is creative and sophisticated. The menu is inspired by the perfect combination of the national cuisine and the Mediterranean, respecting the original flavours and the freshness of the ingredients.
William – Funchal
The recently renovated William restaurant of the historic Belmond Reid’s Palace hotel in Funchal has since 2015 Joachim Koerper as a consultant chef. The renowned chef, who already has a Michelin-starred restaurant in Lisbon, Eleven, gets one more distinction for the Country – it is the second restaurant in Madeira to enter the Guide. Luís Pestana is the executive chef of the restaurant and has worked for William for more than 25 years.
Willie’s – Vilamoura
Since arriving in the Algarve 1985, Willie has maintained an enviable position as one of Algarve`s outstanding chefs. His string of accolades is well deserved as Willie is a perfectionist, dedicated to his profession and passionate about food. Willie’s energy and enthusiasm know no bounds and he continues to impress both locals and tourists alike with his exceptional talent and his own unique style of modern international cuisine.
