Ruben van Megen Presents New Design Concepts at Dutch Design Week ⇒ Dutch Design Week, taking place from 20 to 28 October, transforms Eindhoven into the epicentre of the international design scene for nine days. Designer Ruben van Megen will be present at DDW ’18, showcasing two brand new design concepts and four new products. The work that will be shown perfectly reflects Ruben’s design philosophy, designing in multiple layers on the basis of stories and research. For the presentation at the Dutch Design Week, the designer chose to present the pieces in boxes, like hidden gems.
The designer shows a new chair that has been given the name ‘Antimacasssar III’. This chair has been inspired by and made out of antimacassar; a crocheted doily which protected chairs from hair conditioner in bygone days. The use of covering the back and armrests of a chair was introduced around 1900, around the same time that fashionable men started to groom their hair with a hair oil called Macassar. The custom was then revived when the substitute Brylcreem made its appearance around 1950. That hair oil too kept many crafts enthusiasts busy – numerous antimacassars were once again crocheted to protect the furniture against the newest hair conditioner on the block. Now Ruben breathes new life into the custom for the third time.
Protecting the furniture by covering it fascinates the designer. Covering a design with a disfiguring object to conserve it does not match the sense of justice of the designer, who sees aesthetics as the primary characteristic of an object. In addition, Ruben wonders what conservation means. Could it be that our Western society is too focused on conservation? Does it make you forget to enjoy life? And how damaging is it to take a risk if that risk brings about freedom? Ruben translates these thoughts into this chair, which has been fabricated with solid cast bronze. The frame, which remains exposed, is visibly affected by the ravages of time. The backrest on which the antimacassar is resting is completely intact.
The chair ‘The Cord Connection’ will also be given an audience for the first time. The chair has been completely made out of baling twine; the polypropylene rope used to bind hay and straw together. This baling twine is a waste product from, among other things, horse farms. Horse owners in the Netherlands use enough rope to go around the world 7 times a year.
This waste stream fascinated Ruben. He began to investigate whether a new product could emerge from a single waste product that seems to be useless. After a lot of technical research, Ruben now makes solid material from the rope for the structure and combines this with the original (flexible) form.
The very successful Café 6116 collection is being expanded with a round dining table and floor elements made from Persian carpet. The floor elements are Ruben van Megen’s first steps on the market for interior architecture. The elements can be inlaid. Ferdinand Bol and Rembrandt van Rijn already captured Persian carpets in the 17th-century portraits of the aristocrats. In the early 20th century, the use of Persian carpets on top of the table emerged to the average households and after that, the custom almost completely disappeared. The collection Café 6116 has been inspired by this phenomenon. The pieces contain actual Persian carpets. Every piece is therefore unique.
The designer uses carpets that bear the marks of the lives of the owners for many years. The tooth of time characterized and beautified them. Ruben captures the years of memories and secrets by fossilizing the carpets. Scars, which remain in sight after processing, are evidence of a former life. The pieces are part of the collection in several international renowned galleries. The exhibition can be visited every day from 10.00 – 20.00 at the location of Piet Hein Eek. (Sunday 28 October to 18.00) Here, as in previous years, a selection of promising design is shown that Piet Hein Eek himself selects.
