Thanks to its careful selection of international galleries, miart is the Italian fair that presents the public with the widest array of works, from early 20th-century art through to the creations of the most recent generations.
With its numerous different sections, its rich programme of awards and its ambitious series of talks open to the public, every Spring miart brings an international audience of collectors, curators, museum directors, artists, designers, art lovers and journalists to Milan. miart is a fair in which modern and contemporary art communicate constant references with explicit echoes. It affords a situation to grasp links between the past and present. miart will emphasize this aspect aspiring to work on the possibility of testing institutional strategies that differ from existing models, the aim being to set out along a path in which the event plays an active role in modern and contemporary production throughout the entire year, not just during the days of the art fair.
miart 2018 is divided into 8 sections. First, the Emergent is a section for galleries whose programming focuses on the artists latest generations. Then, you’ll find the established sections. Decades pays tribute to the central role of galleries and their history in an itinerary that crosses the 20th century, divided by decades. Each booth, through a monographic or thematic exhibition, presents a key moment of the period in question, in a succession of 9 projects dating from the 1910s to the 1990s. Generations is an invitational curated section in which two galleries are invited to create a dialogue between two artists belonging to two different generations. In Object, you’ll meet galleries active in the promotion of experimental design, decorative arts and limited editions and collectable design, whose exhibition activities are rooted in a close collaboration with the designers. Regardless of the section, the galleries are invited to exhibit context-based, site-specific or interactive works within their stand. This means installations, wall paintings and wall drawings, projects to be executed, specific commissions, performances and contract work. The focus of these works is to develop a direct relationship with the public and/or the collector.
For the fourth consecutive year, miartalks will be organized in collaboration with In Between Art Film, a production company for artists’ films and experimental video works that supports and encourages dialogue between disciplines and its diffusion in institutional contexts. During the three days in which miart will be open to the public, more than 40 international artists, curators, museum directors and writers will be invited to share their ideas in conversations and roundtables within a specific thematic framework, in keeping with the concept of the miartalks as a multidisciplinary forum. Brought together under the title “What Can We Imagine?”, miartalks 2018 will explore imagination as an essential force that creates and transforms reality, rather than as a form of escape from the present.
The 23rd edition of miart will once again be the catalyst of the Milan Art Week, a weeklong series of exhibition openings, special events and performances, involving the major public and private institutions as well as the city’s foundations and galleries, no-profit and artist-run spaces, all entities that make Milan one of the international capitals of modern art and contemporary creativity.
