Know How Joinery Impacts Boca do Lobo’s Luxury Furniture Designs ⇒ Joinery is one of humankind’s oldest arts, that has been reborn thanks to the perfect marriage created between ancient skills and mechanical methods. Luxury furniture calls for beautiful forms and one-of-kind silhouettes and that’s exactly what joinery provides. In this article, CovetED has the pleasure to present you some of the best examples of luxury furniture pieces by contemporary luxury brand Boca do Lobo that were created with this art.
Joinery is one of the most elementary concepts in woodworking that connects different pieces of wood. It’s basic yet precious foundation that is built in the pieces’ skeleton, therefore, it’s an effective technique that’s in the spotlight of Boca do Lobo’s designs.
The look of the joint, how strong it is and how long it will last through time are some of the characteristics that are determined by the joining materials and what kind of technique is used during the process. A knowledge that valuable woodworkers have been putting into Boca do Lobo’s designs to make sure the one-of-kind silhouettes are enlightened.
Mr. Cosme is the most prominent name regarding the woodworking team and, like many Portuguese joiners, he started working in one of the many local carpentries when he was a still child. “I put my heart and soul into everything I do, and Diamond was the most challenging piece. It was one of the most joyful days when I finished a piece like that, no one can even imagine” says Mr. Cosme.
“By twelve I was already making dining tables and so on. It’s been 40 years now”. Mr Cosme is also responsible for exploring different wood techniques such as wood carving or marquetry, he reveals “After learning the art of handling the tools you can do any kind of piece. When you look at the piece, you immediately know what needs to be done”. Wood carving is one of humankind’s oldest arts, having been used for centuries to make sculpturing ornaments in wooden objects, creating undeniably exceptional details. The marquetry method is something that requires a careful and exhaustive work. “I am aware that being a joiner is a disappearing art”, says the person who gives shape to the classic outstanding Guggenheim cabinet or the imposing Royal dining table.
One of Boca do Lobo’s best example for the use of joinery in a piece is the Diamond Emerald sideboard. With the style of a precious jewel, the sideboard, coloured in green emerald, will make a splash in any interior design. Like the amethyst Diamond, this sideboard also features three highly sculptured doors leading to a gold leaf interior with shelving and two drawers.
The Marie Antoinette mirror is another prime example, representing the attitude and characteristics of a critical “époque” that shaped French history. Inspired by the controversy behind her time in the French Court and the lavish lifestyle led by the last generation of French Royal Family’s, the Marie Antoinette mirror represents the importance given to greatness and extravagance, from its size to its finishing details.
The D. Manuel cabinet is inspired by King Manuel I of Portugal, best known for his support of Portuguese maritime exploration. This noble cabinet draws inspirations from his legacy, the Manueline aesthetic and style, paying tribute to Portugal’s most influential epochs.
The Manu writing desk is also inspired by the Manueline style, which is ideal for a classic office or a romantic bedroom. It has a top lined with a black lacquered mirror and a work area made of leather. The base has a turned and lacquered finished with a high gloss varnish.
The Marie Thérèse mirror is inspired by the eldest daughter of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI, the last King of France. Represented through beautiful lines and special elements, the Marie Thérèse brings a breath of curves to embody the quality and integrity of a true art piece.
The Picadilly mirror is a result of new concepts that featured impossible constructions, explorations of the infinity, architecture, and tessellations. With a convex mirror, its’ frame is made of highly handcrafted poplar. The mirror is a perfect reflection of the masters at work at Boca do Lobo Design Studio.
The Picadilly sideboard is an exclusive design piece that combines the dynamism of design with the power of narrative. The sideboard is a highly expressive Limited Edition work, a precise knowledge of craft, materials and production techniques.
The Royal dining table has hand-carved details of the intricate marquetry design and finishes, that are executed with amazing precision by the artisans. Made from wood, each of its details is executed with precision, from its frame in a baroque and minimalist faceted style, to its unique tabletop, in a palisander veneer patchwork collage, finished with a high gloss varnish.
The Time Goes By clock is a design piece that’s turned into a piece of art, with a blend of enchanting fantasy and potent reality.
Lastly, the Victoria cabinet is a piece that transcends traditional and modern boundaries. Each fusion of art and design is handcrafted from the finest materials by master artisans using production methods developed to preserve traditional techniques and deliver the highest quality.
