SingaPlural showcases the best design elements from the multi-faceted creative spectrum. The event celebrates design in all forms and functions and showcases the work processes through robust collaborations between designers and the industry. The theme ‘Stories’ expresses and celebrates the narratives of creatives and encourages the creation of new stories in each individual and collaboration, shared with the audience.
With the theme “A State in Play”, SingaPlural 2018 will be a celebration of the stage of work even before design begins. This is when you allow naivety to the core, and simply play, explore and experiment, free from an end in mind. Are the by-products of “Play” accidents, failures and wastes? Or are they prototypes of ideas yet to discover their full potential and applications? In “Play”, there are no failed experiments, only experiments with unexpected outcomes.
“Play” is framed as research and experimentation within design and this state of “Play” ranges from the tactile exploration of materials such as the moulding of clay to the digital and computational design of a system. The theme also suggests that the environment the event is operating in, Singapore, is well positioned and conducive for explorations, testing and experimentation. The lecture series aims to complement the exhibition by extending the dimension of “Play” into practice and also provide a perspective of the future.

Organised by the Singapore Furniture Industries Council since 2012, the name “SingaPlural” is derived from a combination of the terms “Singular” and “Plural” and was conceived from the need to create a common platform to link designers with the industry. Supported by DesignSingapore Council, International Enterprise Singapore, Singapore Tourism Board and SPRING Singapore, SingaPlural is also the anchor event of the annual Singapore Design Week, which is organised by the DesignSingapore Council, a part of the Ministry of Communications and Information. The event is making great strides with unprecedented breadth and depth of partnerships in this year’s programming.
For the fifth edition of Singapore Design Week, the organization took deliberate steps to bring more international and local partners onboard. To spur collaboration and build industry capabilities, they invited ideas from the ground in late 2017 for district activations and design trails. Design creatives LOPELAB, HJGHER, 2 and Shophouse & Co stepped up to the challenge and are curating their own programmes with new business models.
