A round pretty stone coffee table, named Orsetto 02 (part of the collection Orsetto), is the new work of the French designer and architect Martin Massé for the New York gallery Studio Twenty Seven. As you can see, a ring of stubby legs holds a big rounded mushroom-style tabletop, in CovetED, we find this piece very interesting in many ways! Join us to discover more about it!
Wishing to know more about this project, we discovered that Orsetto means baby bear in Italian, the cute appearance of the table is inevitable to miss, so we couldn’t agree more about it! Massé also admitted that the collection is a direct reference to the work of Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki, known for titles like “Sen and Chihiro’s Spiriting Away” and “My Neighbor Totoro” (for example).
Despite having a cute and child-friendly appearance, the table is heavy enough to need to be winched in place to be moved safely. It stays very close to the ground at only 35 centimetres high and successfully achieving the height of an adult’s shins. The Orsetto 02 was crafted with stonemason’s experience at the Ateliers Saint Jaques in France’s Chevreuse valley.
Made of limestone, because of its heft, the material is more commonly used as a surface in interior design projects, or as an architectural element. Despite being less usually chosen for furniture, designers are always trying to project a different meaning to what they work with. This work is a perfect example of that. Hewn from Italian Pietra dei Medici marble, just to have a notion of its exclusivity, only 12 models of the table have been made. Without any doubt, this adds precious value to Massé’s work.
We find this piece absolutely stunning in a pretty, clean and unique way. Walking hand in hand, aesthetics and functionality are completed in a very well-executed project.
