Lange 1 “25th Anniversary” by A. Lange & Söhne

The First 2019 Watch Trends From Top Luxury Brands

A. Lange & Söhne, a sounding name in the luxury brands world, made its triumphant return in 1994 with the Lange 1 – instantly recognisable by its large jumping date display and off-centre hours and minutes dial. Twenty-five years on, the brand is celebrating the advent of this now iconic watch with a special collection. While the Lange 1’s characteristic design has remained virtually unchanged throughout these years, this edition in white gold stands out for its argenté-coloured dial printed with blue numerals, blue numerals for the date display, and an engraved hinged back that opens to reveal the intricacies of the movement – namely the L121.

Zeitwerk Date A. Lange & Söhne

Its innovative mechanism burst onto the scene in 2009, showing numerical jumping hours and minutes. A decade later, the Zeitwerk Date incorporates a completely new mechanism with an additional date function. The engineers at Lange & Söhne worked around the small amount of dial space left by the numeral discs to come up with an ingenious alternative to a conventional date aperture: a peripheral display on a glass ring, with printed numerals from 1 to 31.

Dual Time Resonance Sapphire by Armin Strom

The First 2019 Watch Trends From Top Luxury Brands

How to give a 360° vision of the intricacies of watchmaking? Currently one of the biggest luxury brands in the watch industry, Armin Strom’s response is to take transparency to its ultimate level, and surround two independent movements with an impressive sapphire case. This is a visual immersion into the deepest recesses of these two mechanisms which, arranged side by side, track two different times. The key, which was three years in development, is the patented Resonance Clutch Spring which synchronises the movements using this fascinating physical phenomenon for significantly greater timekeeping precision.

Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Selfwinding Chronograph

The First 2019 Watch Trends From Top Luxury Brands

Audemars Piguet constantly reinvents itself, now with a completely new collection that was seven years in the making. First of all, Code 11.59 takes a new direction in design, distinguished by a thin, round bezel above a subtly octagonal caseband, open-worked lugs, and a lacquered dial beneath a sapphire crystal whose double curve creates a unique optical experience. Code 11.59 is also a fine example of the brand’s watchmaking skill, embodied here by its first in-house integrated column-wheel chronograph movement.

Royal Oak Frosted Gold Double Balance Wheel Openworked by Audemars Piguet

The First 2019 Watch Trends From Top Luxury Brands

The precision and performance of Audemars Piguet’s double balance-wheel movement takes on feminine allure inside a Royal Oak case with a smaller 37mm diameter. The sides, octagonal bezel and bracelet, all in white gold, have been carefully hammered using a traditional jewellery-making technique to create a frosted impression, like snow sparkling in the winter sun. This subtle shimmer is magnified by a rainbow of 32 baguette-cut sapphires around the bezel.

Récital 21 by Bovet 1822

The First 2019 Watch Trends From Top Luxury Brands

Elegance, intuitiveness and legibility prevail in this new interpretation of the retrograde perpetual calendar. Bovet has chosen to house this complication in a “writing slope” case which, being inclined at 6 o’clock, allows a three-dimensional view of the dial. So as to ensure each indication can be read at a glance, hours and minutes are centrally positioned while the perpetual calendar information is set around the periphery. Except for the date, shown by a retrograde pointer rotating around the hours and minutes, all the calendar indications are given in apertures: vertical for the days and months; circular for the leap year cycle (at 3 o’clock).

Récital 23 by Bovet 1822

The First 2019 Watch Trends From Top Luxury Brands

Bovet’s first women’s timepiece to feature a “writing slope” case, whose bezel is inclined at 6 o’clock, the Récital 23 delivers a technical and, at the same time, poetic interpretation of the moon-phase display. Prominent in three dimensions in the upper part of the dial, the hemispherical dome of the lunar complication is engraved across its surface, and its cavities filled with lume. The current phase of the moon is displayed in a tri-dimensional circular aperture; manufacturing and decorating this window alone implies a full day of work for the brand’s skilled artisans. Only the most refined exterior could contain such a precision mechanism, which requires a single adjustment of one day in 122 years, hence Bovet has chosen white gold for the case, which is set with round or baguette diamonds, aventurine glass for the dial, and diamonds for the hour markers.

Baignoire Allongée by Cartier

The First 2019 Watch Trends From Top Luxury Brands

The Baignoire is a watch of many faces. Born in Paris in the late 1950s, its perfect oval underwent a transformation in 1960s Swinging London, stretching its forms to adorn women’s wrists with a mix of elegance and extravagance. Renamed Baignoire Allongée, it continues to prove that nothing succeeds like excess, when in expert hands. Its latest asset? A pink gold bezel whose sculpted spikes borrow from Cartier’s, one of the biggest luxury brands, jewellery idiom and the Clous de Paris hobnail design. Adding to this tactile appeal, the dial is ablaze with a carpet of diamonds.
