Founded on a mission to curate works by artists who utilize time-honoured craft techniques and narratives, the Maker + Place studio unites tradition with contemporary craftsmanship and design. The offerings up for grabs included one-of-a-kind ceramics, wall hangings, textiles, furniture, design objects and much more.
Carter Hopkins’ Cherry Chair
Michaela Carpenter, Founder and CEO of Maker + Place, enlisted her favourite craftsman to create pieces specifically for the collaboration with Sotheby’s. The 23 lots on offer from January 5-22 showcased the beauty of handmade objects, including works by Alex Devol, Ryan Zimmerman, Max Bainbridge and many more. A few other highlights include Marcin Rusak’s Perishable Vase, a visionary piece which encapsulates floral particles in a traditional vessel form, and Carter Hopkins’ Cherry Chair, a timeless classic in the making. These stunning pieces were on public exhibition in Sotheby’s New York headquarters.
