Part of CovetED Magazine‘s selection of the world’s most inspiring interior designers, Peter Dunham is a Los Angeles-based interior designer. He started Peter Dunham Textiles in 2003 and his furnishings showroom Hollywood at Home shortly after. Read on to get to know him and his truly inspiring portfolio full of wonderful and curated coastal residences.
Peter Dunham was raised in France and educated in England at Stowe. He read modern languages at Exeter College and business administration at the American University in Paris. After graduating he worked in real estate in New York City.
Peter moved to Los Angeles in 1998 and immediately started his interior design company. In 2003 he launched his eponymous fabric and wallpaper collection, now sold through 16 showrooms worldwide. To house a growing collection of handcrafted furniture, textiles and vintage finds, Peter opened Hollywood at Home in 2007, which is Peter Dunham Textiles’ flagship showroom. Located in Los Angeles’s La Cienega Design Quarter, it has become a leading destination for design lovers.
Peter and his team split their time between restoring landmarked houses and collaborating with renowned architects on ground up projects. Current projects include a modernist Marmol Radziner house overlooking the Pacific in Montecito, residences in Los Angeles, the Bay area, Newport Beach, Montana and an iconic 1963 Horace Gifford house on Fire Island.
The Wall Street Journal described his style as “Merchant Ivory Moderne” and “restraint with a kick.” His international style embraces color and pattern, mixing bespoke furnishings, vintage finds and modern luxuries. His design work has been featured in Architectural Digest, ELLE Decor, House and Garden, House Beautiful, Coastal Living, WSJ, Veranda, Domino, Hollywood Reporter, Los Angeles Times, and more. Peter is on ELLE Decor’s A-List and included in Vendome Press’s new book, Inspired Design: The 100 Most Important Designers of the Past 100 Years.
When it comes to textiles, Peter is always on the hunt for inspiration for new textiles and wallpapers, traveling the world every year and finding ideas abroad as well as in his own backyard. His travels as a young man to India, European upbringing, and California lifestyle inform our fabrics and wallpaper, creating a collection that celebrates adventure, history, colour, pattern, and a relaxed sophistication. So much of Peter’s inspiration comes from travel.
Their best-selling fabric is fig leaf (picture below), which is inspired by the fig groves and quirky home of Salvador Dali, Peter’s next door neighbour growing up in Spain.
“Peter Dunham’s designs look thoughtfully accumulated, with compelling layers of textiles, patterns, and colors coming together to create uniquely casual and sophisticated spaces.” — Coastal Living
