Zanini de Zanine is a surfer on the side that comes taking radical waves when it comes to design. At just 35, he draws the attention of big brands like the Italian Slamp and Cappellini and has accumulated more than 15 awards in his career.
Zanine is bold and does not hesitate to bet on the versatility of shapes and materials – produced in wood, plastic, forest residue and even recycled material as skateboard shape. No time to close the studio, the designer now has a job in wood and corten steel (metal used in construction and manufacture of sculptures).
Biography: Zanine, a powerful design
Zanini was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1978 and grew up watching his father, José Zanine Caldas, work. He trained with Sergio Rodrigues, when he produced its first mobile. In 2002 he graduated in Industrial Design from PUC-Rio.

Since 2003, he began producing furniture in solid wood, with demolition of parts – columns, beams and stakes of old houses – baptized as “Contemporary Carpentry”. From 2005 the designer begins to create a new line of furniture with industrially produced parts, as well as using wood with controlled origin, various materials such as plastic, methacrylate, metal parts and other industrial products. To represent the furniture of this new line, Zanini creates in 2011 the Studio Zanini.

Background & Realizations: best projects
Son of the architect José Zanine Caldas, who collaborated mainly with Oscar Niemeyer, Zanini of Zanine grew up watching his father work in architecture, sculpture and project design. Today signs parts for large national and international brands such as French Tolix, the Italian Cappellini, Poltrona Frau and Slamp, and the American Espasso.
Zanini collects, nothing less than 19 awards. Among some of his achievements are: the Ornare Concept in 2013, in São Paulo; the IF Awards, in Hannover, Germany, in 2012; Gold Idea Brazil in 2010 and the Young Talent award ARC DESIGN (Brazil) in 2009.
The professional also has exhibited his pieces in various parts of the world, such as Design Week New York and Rio + Design in Milan, Italy, both in 2013, and the Brazilian Furniture: Modern & Contemporary Design in Lisbon, as well as exhibitions in various Brazilian states. In addition, Zanine was recently named “Designer of the Year” in the first edition of Maison & Objet Americas.

In 2011 Zanini de Zanine was invited by Giulio Cappellini, one of the most influential people in the world design and director of Cappellini (Italy) to collaborate with Cappellini.

Look back and conclude that, in recent years, built up an admirable history is a privilege of the few. This is the case of Zanini of Zanine designer, who has just released a book celebrating its first ten-year career. The work, entitled only Zanini of Zanine by Editora looks, brings a panorama, in first person, and the creations of Brazilian life.
Small blocks of text and many photos of the book tell the story of the artist from his early years in Nova Viçosa, Bahia, to the solo exhibitions he held in 2013 in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba and New York. The influence of his father, the architect José Zanine Caldas, it is clear from the beginning.
Besides the memories lovingly rescued by the designer, the book lets you know in depth his two fronts. The first, in Studio Zanini in developing designs for industrial production and the second at Atelier wood, facing a craft and more exclusive production. The book exposes, with personal details that make reading more enjoyable, the whole creative process Zanini, from their reasoning, inspirations and techniques, and coming to the end product and to market principles.

Talent is a heritage
The ease with designs originated still in the family environment. In a rustically furnished apartment, full of wooden items, Rio’s youth lived surrounded by his father’s furniture. The strength of the Brazilian culture was also present in the craft spread by the home environments – from ceramics to carpets. Living with Zanine Caldas and his admirable work was gradually becoming reference.
Without a creative process defined – it can go weeks without drawing and suddenly have many ideas in a single day – Zanine dedicated an attentive look at the entire design, development and results: “For me, each piece has a story.”
At the moment, Zanini of Zanine is involved in a major project: the restoration of the former Cine Palace Theatre of Rio de Janeiro which will be renovated for the Olympics. “The challenge is great because we are doing throughout the interior, the entrance, the armchairs, the dressing rooms … The idea is that the space will become multidisciplinary,” he says.
In addition, he continues to develop objects and furniture for various brands and actions. In the future, we want to continue innovating and playing with the scales of possibilities. Why not design something big like a house or as unusual as a soap?
