Having established the progressive, enduring philosophy and unique branding of e15, he has received international awards for many of his designs, which are identifying icons for e15 and part of several permanent exhibitions in museums. Parallel to the creation of e15, Philipp Mainzer practised architecture in New York and continues to do so since his return to Germany in 2001. He is a member of the executive committee of German Design Council and regularly gives lectures on architecture, design and branding. Philipp Mainzer is also the creative and managing director of e15 and his architecture office.
Philipp Mainzer Office for Architecture and Design works internationally on commercial, residential and cultural projects providing full architectural, exhibition and interior design as well as furniture design services for both the public and private sector. Committed to a consistent and progressive conceptual approach, the work is inspired by the dynamic interaction of diverse cultures and disciplines. With a focus on a high level of quality and authenticity, the diverse team of architects and designers develops original concepts with refined aesthetics and the required functionality. The partnership with modern furniture brand e15 effects synergies, extending the boundaries of traditional architecture.
Some of his most recent projects include the Aesop store in Frankfurt. Taking inspiration from the city’s modernist and cultural roots, the colour palette was developed to evoke the forest green of the German landscape whilst the floor is created using matte grey ceramic tiles that reference the salt-glazed ‘Bembel’ stoneware, typical of the local region. Elsewhere the simple beauty of raw materials is celebrated; Mainzer’s office says the aim was to create an environment where ‘The architecture focuses on the product rather than competing with it. Back-lit shelves in forest green float along the pale green-grey walls, generating a natural and complementing environment that supports the central element of the store, which is a monolithic solid walnut structure integrating a multi-purpose sink in raw brass’.
