The Retreat in Kawanaga consists of a home located at the hot sulfur springs in the Kanagawa prefecture. It’s a private property composed by the main home, a SPA two guest houses and a tea house. This home is already a stunning view in it of itself, not to mention the unique view it has towards Mout Fuji. This incredible team-up of Christian Liaigre and Kengo Kuma definitely had its fair share of results.
Both on the inside and the outside we can tell that the home handled by Christian Liaigre and Kengo Kuma knows and interprets the essential elements of traditional Japanese homes. However, it handles them with a modern take through the essential shapes and materials.
Many of the elements that are part of the home decor consist of white walls and black-stained woods custom made furniture. These are heavily inspired by the Shodo (referring to Japanese calligraphy) creating a unique combo of black and white this way. Christian Liaigre definitely knows how to adapt to the culture of Japan in this successful interior design project.
As a matter of fact, an observant person can definitely detect Christian Liaigre’s style with some pretty spacious and generous shapes in direct connection with the delicacy and discretion that defines traditional Japanese culture. By having Kengo Kuma onboard this incredible initiative, the French interior designer proved once again that he’s not only a great professional but a very versatile interior decorator.
