French brand Maison Matisse launches its first collection of interiors with the signature stylings of the Italian designer. Maison Matisse is expanding its collection with a set of pieces designed by Cristina Celestino, whose rich artistic vision and use of decorative motifs blend with the legacy of the past. A sofa, an armchair, a folding screen, two coffee tables, a rug, a wallpaper and a selection of home accessories are the stars of this second permanent collection, inspired by the iconic still-life Intérieur Aux Aubergine (1911), which is regarded as one of Henri Matisse’s most decorative paintings.

Cristina Celestino’s projects combine historical and contemporary references from the world of fashion, art and design. This collection was developed around three themes. The textures drawn by Matisse often all-over, are a combination of geometric shapes and organic forms, layers of signs and references that play with scale effects, orientalism and abstract floral design. 

The furniture in the Intérieur aux Aubergines collection, inspired by the eponymous painting by Henri Matisse (1911), is accompanied by a series of decorative objects designed by Cristina Celestino. 

Cristina Celestino was born in Pordenone in 1980. After graduating from the Università Iuav in Venice (Higher Institute of Architecture of Venice), in 2005 she began to work with several prestigious firms and focused her attention on interior architecture and design.

Intérieur aux aubergines

Canapé Colette

The Colette sofa, like the armchair, picks up on the idea of the contrast between the indoors and the outdoors, present in still life Intérieur aux aubergines (1911) that inspired Italian designer Cristina Celestino in creating this collection.  The fabric used for the seats, the folding screen, the wallpaper, and the cushions were made from natural yarns by a renowned Venetian factory that dates back to the 18th century.

Bianca round table

The Bianca coffee table uses the palette of colours drawn from the still life Intérieur aux aubergines (1911) to create a perfect harmony with the solid colour fabric used for the sofas, armchairs, and folding screens. The rattan frame of the round Bianca coffee table is topped with a ceramic tabletop. The tabletop is cast and removed from the mould by hand by one of Italy’s oldest artisan manufacturers, a family-run business founded in Tuscany in 1921. The pieces are fired the first time, then painted with engobe and fired again to set the colour.

Maison Matisse is expanding its permanent collections with a set of pieces by Cristina Celestino that brings Intérieur aux Aubergines to life through a collection of furniture and decorative objects. The folding screen, at the centre of the eponymous painting by Henri Matisse (1911) is the showpiece of the collection. The 3 hand-carved wooden panels and pearlized finish give it decorative style, in homage to the painting that is considered to be one of the artist’s most decorative.
