Neal Beckstedt managed to blend the best of both worlds, uniting competing elements with an aesthetic that could best be described as Manhattan by way of Paris, as he explains, “There’s an eclecticism about French design that is so attractive. We wanted to convey this sense of internationalism while keeping the design rooted in New York.”

According to the designer, the couple had an impeccable taste which made his job somewhat easier, “They’re very cultured and worldly and beyond chic, so the apartment is a reflection of them.” Riffing on their fashion-forward cues, he transformed the fourth-level space, refinishing the original parquet flooring and wall panelling is a recurring theme throughout the house. At the entrance of each room, the designer placed heightening thresholds in order to impart an airy atmosphere of grandeur. The furnishings and decor of each division were also selected following this theme, including an Empire-style chandelier in the dining room, tasselled drapery in the living room, the Louis XVI fauteuils in the library, among many other.

In the newly renovated master bedroom, one can see a stunning gilded trifold mirror with faux-mullioned panes that conceals the new marble bath and De Gournay–covered study while exuding a fascinating touch of Old World charm. When visiting Morocco, the couple found outstanding vintage fabrics that now adorn the throw pillows.

Characteristics from the contemporary design style can be seen throughout the apartment as well as the prominent use of colours and shapes. The master bedroom also features a sleek new fireplace surround cut in honed travertine and a tulip-like armchair by India Mahdavi. In the library, you can also find a geometric rug by House of Luv. Furthermore, a seductive Serpentine sofa by Vladimir Kagan welcomes a soft flair to the living room. Crisp white walls give way to unexpected shades, from the oxblood-lacquered library to the polished fior pesco marble backsplash in the kitchen—a textural contrast to cabinetry coated in Farrow & Ball’s salmon-hued Setting Plaster.

“I wanted to capture the couple’s youth and energy and spirit, and these more playful details felt sophisticated while offsetting the formality and traditionalism of some of the elements.” – Neal Beckstedt.

This duality of American and French design can be best found in the powder room of the apartment where a patterned Hermès wallpaper, a genre-bending Gio Ponti mirror and a magical brass hippo faucet by P.E Guerin give a perfect contrast to each other. As a whole, the interior design of this home plays contrast between masculine and feminine elements as well as more traditional and contemporary ones. It feels personal and unique that brings a bit of the Parisian spirit while also being undeniable New York-styled.
