Eye Of The Storm: See The Futuristic Design Of The $5M Dome HomeSunday 22 July 2018
Eye Of The Storm: See The Futuristic Design Of The $5M Dome Home ⇒ Located off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina, the “Eye Of The Storm” house stands out for its futuristic design and for being a landmark when it comes to hurricane-proof constructions. Known to locals as the “Star Wars house“, it was built in 1989 by George Paul in order to replace his parents’ beach home, after it was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo, and now it’s on the market for 5 million dollars.
The house itself has a very sustainable building, using bricks rescued from the original beach house to create a fireplace with one chimney but two flues, so that it can serve as both a cosy year-round warmer on cool days inside, and outside works as a grill for barbecues when the weather is nice.
But Eye Of The Storm was built for bad weather, working like a four-level, 3,500 square foot beach bunker. It was constructed of approximately 600 tons of reinforced concrete with eight openings, five of which are large enough to drive a car through them or to withstand massive storm without a scratch.
The three bedroom, five bathroom home cost about $600,000 to build, and experts in dome home design say it represents the future of building codes and waterfront architecture in the face of climate change.
Pareto Group listing agent Michael Royal, who is George Paul’s son, is selling the Eye of the Storm for the first time outside the family, has started an Instagram contest to get more people around the world engaged with the dome home and storm-proof building in general.
But this house isn’t the only one of its’ kind. There are other examples, like Florida’s Dome of a Home built by Mark Sigler. Sigler, who’s lived through nine major hurricanes in the last 15 years, claims that every single home on the shoreline around him has been replaced due to storm damage while his “incredibly tough” dome home remains intact.
These houses have often been featured on shows for their environmentally innovative architecture, designed to weather coastal climate change. If you believe that this is the housing of the future, don’t miss the chance to buy Eye Of The Storm for $5 million or go to the Monolithic Dome Institute for all the information needed to build your own dome home.
