Ancient Arts: Be Impressed by the Value and Beauty of Arraiolos Rugs ⇒ The Arraiolos Rugs or Tapestry are some of the most traditional Products of Portugal! These exquisite and highly curated creations are inspired by Persian Carpets and consist of rugs made of embroidered wool and embellished with some of the most amazing patterns that are exclusively made in a traditional manner in the small town of Arraiolos, Portugal.
As we mentioned before, The Arraiolos rug are embroidered floor covering made in Arraiolos, in the north of Évora, Portugal. The technique is a form of cross-stitch that completely covers the linen cloth foundation. Today most rugs are made as a cottage industry by the women of Arraiolos.
Now, you’ll get to hear from a master artisan, Paula Ramalho who was present during the grand Luxury Design & Craftsmanship Summit this past month. The expert in the production of arraiolos has shown an immeasurable passion for this technique since she was six years old. Ramalho followed in her mother’s footsteps and she’s still active, having the mission of developing this art form, so it is never forgotten.
In regards to the process behind the arraiolos, Paula Ramalho explains that “The first thing you have to do is the pattern, checkered. We adapt the pattern to the rug’s measurements, which is designed by hand. Then, we do the scoring of the rug itself on the canvas, and then we start.”
In actuality, many people actually own these centenaries rugs due to the value and beauty they possess, they aren’t just rugs but authentic works of art, it takes a lot of work for these rugs to look like this, but in the end, the result is extraordinary.
