Meet the Five Nominees For The Oscar of Best Production DesignSaturday 10 February 2018
Meet the Five Nominees For The Oscar of Best Production Design – The Oscar Nominees were announced in January and among the categories, there is one that stands out for its beauty and importance to a film visual: Production Design. Let CovetED introduce this year’s nominees in this prestigious category!
First of all, let us explain in what consists the category of Production Design! Well, Production Design it’s an important department that’s responsible for the overall visual look of the production. This department is commanded by the main Design Producer and the Set Decorator. The people that work within the Production Design department are responsible for selecting the settings and style that visually tell the story.
Unlike other categories, Production Design hasn’t got a clear front-runner. In a very balanced dispute, the most likely winner is the Production Design of the romantic thriller “The Shape of Water” from director Guillermo Del Toro. Led by Paul Denham Austerberry, Shane Vieau and Jeff Melvin, the Production Design Department of this film did an astonishing job in helping director Guillermo del Toro transform his creative vision. The end result is a unique movie with a stunning visual and amazing mid-century set that appeals to the audience.
The other favorite is the sci-fi movie “Blade Runner 2049“. Dennis Gassner and Alessandra Querzola are the two well-deserved nominees because their work helped glamourize a futuristic story that lacks a little bit of elegance! The amazing futuristic sets and creative design ideas that they produced are amazing and work well with the overall vibe of the picture.
For a more fantasy feel let’s look at the work of Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer on the live-action adaptation of the iconic Disney classic “Beauty and the Beast“. They work stay faithful to the design style of the classic animation and that’s why the movie was so successful amongst the fans of the original film. The amazing sets inspired by XVII Century France also helped Greenwood and Specer to lock this important nomination!
Finally let’s talk about two pictures that take place during the Second World War: “Darkest Hour” and “Dunkirk”. The team of “Beauty in the Beast” is also nominated for their work on the British drama “Darkest Hour“. We can see in this picture the attention to details of these two professionals that, with a few elaborate sets, managed to transport the audience to Winston Churchill’s offices during the Second World War.
Lastly, the Production Design department of “Dunkirk“ was led by Nathan Crowley and Gary Fettis that helped director Christopher Nolan include some extra authenticity to the portrait of the Battle of Dunkirk! The end result is amazing!
