The highly acclaimed architecture firm Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has a new project on the horizon: a new modular housing complex on an island near Honduras. The Roatán Próspera residential community project is set to be completed later this year and it will have numerous traditional building techniques characteristic of the area. The timber-framed residences will highlight slightly curved palapa roofs as well as expensive terraces with rounded balconies and a generous amount of green space. Today we explore this ambiguous residential project where ZHA collaborated with engineering consultancies AKT II and Hilson Moran to make it a more environmentally-friendly project. One of the main features of this ambitious and enticing complex project will be a digital parametric platform developed by Zaha Hadid Architects’ Computational and Design Group will be available to residents, which will permit the possibility of customization especially in regards to their housing module’s size, arrangement, and furniture designs.
The modules of the Roatán Próspera community are actually being developed off-site and they will be later transported using local networks in order to cut back on carbon emissions and not to endanger any wildlife. This way the complex will be blended into the natural environment without harming it. Sustainable design will be the main focus of this new project. The materials and building method used are rather suitable for fast assembly or disassembly, thus offering one the freedom to personalize their unit in a more ecological manner. Furthermore, the complex will also feature a dehumidifying system that removes water from the atmosphere and filters it for residence use, among other elements.
With this new project, the Caribbean island will become an even more desirable tourist destination, and ultimately, it will come to diversify and strengthen the economy of the region.
