Understanding the client’s needs is the best way to succeed when presenting the ability of design, says Eskew Dumez Ripple. The client most and should be seen as a collaborator, the most important one in the design process. “Extending this collaboration to the communities in which we live and work, we seek to draw out a common vision from a diversity of voices.” The studio believes that diversity can be the key in the process of producing the best design along with the best final result.
Founded in 1989 and based in New Orleans, all the firm’s employees feel motivated and fulfilled to do more, feeling that they are culturally rich in the United States city. They often talk about their home as an inspiration for the design process, in a way that reminds them that they want to be connected with the place they live, but always maintaining a global outlook. They confidently affirm that they breathe culture, blame the diverse group of people that embarked in this “gathering of experiences” journey, being courageous, determined and with an adventurous spirit, attracting motivated newcomers.
“Design is powerful. It can be employed in service of or in opposition to the common good. As designers, we play an indispensable role in realizing a more equitable future. Good design is also a collaborative act. For a project to serve and empower its community, the voices of that community must be heard and integrated into the design process. Our work strives to create places where people can see their identities and stories reflected in their everyday surroundings. Accordingly, we are accountable to our clients but responsible for many.”
The company’s growth is notorious and deserved, having gone from a local firm to a national firm that does not forget its roots. Having won the 2014 Architecture Firm Award, they continue to explore different and effective ways of shaping the community and their profession as well. Working from cosy interiors to large scale urban planning projects the company continues to grow, based on the legacy left by its creator, Allen Eskew, they believe in humility, charm and the power to spread good design as a craft.
