The Power of Design in Design Week Mexico  The sixth World Design Capital and the very first city from the Americas to receive this title, Mexico City has a powerful story to share with the world, as a model for other megacities around the globe using design to tackle the challenges of urbanization and ensure a more livable city. From March 5 to October 7, you have more than 7 months to visit the Mexican capital and the promising Design Week Mexico.

The World Design Organization (WDO), formerly known as the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, is an international non-governmental organization that promotes the profession of industrial design and its ability to generate better products, systems, services and experiences, better business and industry, and, ultimately, a better environment and society. From 12 founding professional design associations in 1957, WDO has grown to include over 140 member organizations from 40 nations, engaging them in collaborative efforts and providing them with the opportunity to be heard internationally. The World Design Capital (WDC) program began in 2008 with the designation of the city of Torino (Italy), followed by Seoul (South Korea) in 2010, Helsinki (Finland) in 2012, Cape Town (South Africa) in 2014 and Taipei (Taiwan) in 2016.

In March 2015, the Design Week Mexico (DWM) organization put together a Mexico City’s bid for World Design Capital 2018. Starting from the importance of design in the future of cities, the potential of this professional field and the relationship within the creative community, Design Week Mexico showcased success stories in urban regeneration, mobility and sustainability strategies of the Mexico City Government, as well as individual and independent projects of the local creative community. The application also featured Mexico City’s cultural infrastructure, as well as its wide offering in the academic preparation of professionals in design, architecture, urban planning, public policy and visual arts.

In September 2015, DWM becomes the World Design Capital 2018 Organizing Committee. Design Week Mexico is the first event in Mexico dedicated to the Mexican creative industries. Building the most influential design scene in Mexico and Latin America through a diverse programming with networking platforms for the creative community with some of the most important actors in the cultural, educational, commercial and governmental spheres. Since its inception, Design Week Mexico has sought to empower the work of Mexican designers, architects and creative professionals. The event highlights the resurgence of Mexico City as a city of the 21st Century through reflective design, collaborative business practices and community engagement.

 

 

One the first two days of the event, as part of the official program of the World Design Capital 2018, thirteen renowned architects, designers, urban planners, writers and artists will discuss the challenges, policies and opportunities our cities face. In a century marked by the city as a determinant of social interaction, it is important to talk about its performance, in order to make it more sustainable, efficient and improve the quality of life of its inhabitants. The speakers will present their vision, will share their best practices and will contribute to the dialogue on new change strategies that promote the well-being of our cities and its population through design.

 

 

WDC Mexico Capital 2018 will include a vast range of activities, exhibits, conferences, panels, installations, documentaries to initiate conversations and interactions highlighting the importance of design in everyday life and its fundamental role in society.
