Meet Damilanostudio Architects and the Incredible Villa GEEFFriday 10 November 2017
Born in Cuneo in 1961, Duilio Damilano always showed a great amount of interest in developing architectural and personal aspects of plastic and material objects, inspired by his father and brother, who are both passionate sculptors. The young Italian graduated in Architecture in 1988 from the Politecnico di Torino, under the supervision of Roberto Gabetti, the late famous Italian architect and professor, and, in the following year, he would begin his professional career as an associate. In 1990 he inaugurated Damilanostudio Architects, his own architectural firm, which was developed through the collaboration with artists and designers, discovering new paths in the field of architecture, continuing his research through architectural projects on a national and international scale.

Damilanostudio Architects is a multidisciplinary architecture firm that operates mainly in the field of architecture and design and develops a language with a contemporary approach for continuous research in the modelling of architectural forms with a sensitivity to design, contemporary culture and urban and natural environments. The collective work is well known for paying a particular attention to light and to transparent and reflective surfaces in projects that take a force of expression that sometimes cancels or enhances the built volumes. The studio is currently following several projects, including administrative offices, residential building and retail spaces in Italy and abroad. The firm takes part in the 13th Venice Biennale of Architecture, in the Italian pavilion, and in a series of international exhibitions. One of the firm’s most renowned works, Officina Vidre Negre, was selected for Mies van der Rohe Prize in 2013, while some of the other projects were published in several international magazines.
One of the firm’s most recent projects, supervised by Duilio Damilano himself, was Villa GEEF, an incredible private residence. Villa GEEF was born in a compromised context, in the first outskirts of Sondrio (Italy), within a terrain lot that was used as a relaxation place by employees of a nearby electric company. The large lot was, in fact, occupied by a building and playgrounds all around. Despite the existing structures, the area presented itself as one with a great potential due to its size and to the surrounding mountain landscape characterized by typical vineyards of Valtellina. The client’s first intention was to build a multi-storey villa. The project developed by the Italian firm focused on a villa on a single ground floor, for both the comfort and the relationship with the landscape. In this location, the choice of building a home in only one floor opens one’s eyes to the vineyards and to the private park. The villa develops into two different areas joined by the covered porch, in line with access to the lot. On one hand, the garage and the dependence for the guests, on the other hand, the owners’ residence.
