Maison et Objet 2018: Designer of the year Cecilie ManzMonday 27 November 2017
Maison et Objet 2018: Designer of the year Cecilie Manz – Cecilie Manz is this year’s extremely talented creative selected to receive Maison et Objet‘s Designer of the Year Award. The biannual Parisian design trade fair is among the most relevant, trend-setting and ground-shaking events in the world of luxury interior design and modern architecture.
Cecilie was an early rise as an artist, despite not initially planning to pursue a career in the field of design. Her parents were ceramicists and she was quick to take a liking to artistic creation. Cecilie Manz rapidly developed an immense passion for objects and practicality. A Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the Helsinki University of Art and Design graduate, Manz is currently the luxury interior design world’s latest obsession.
She focuses on “90% functionality and 90% aesthetics” in her work, according to her own words in an interview with Beoplay Journal. Upon finishing her education, she immediately started worked independently, joking about the short 6 months for which she tried to hold a job in Finland. “I knew right from the start that I wanted to call the shots and be in charge” she pridefully claims.
As mentioned previously, the scandinavian artist’s creative process is not merely comprised of furniture design, but also a very comprehensive study of objects as a whole and their essence, and Manz especially seeks out best way to make them as useful as they are beautiful. She dedicates herself to designing practical tools and utensils that she herself can use in her everyday life, making it almost hard to spot her artwork even in her own studio. The genius behind her abilities hides in plain sight, such as the water bottle big enough to fit a dish brush or her products that only get more beautiful as they get used.
Cecilie Manz is a major woodwork expert, as one can see, but she is very keen on using all kinds of materials, namely leather and stone.
If you’re attending Maison et Objet 2018 in January, make sure to look out for Manz’s original masterpieces and cutting-edge, scandinavian style design, simply because otherwise, you’ll seriously be missing out on some of the most modernist, sleek sights you have ever laid your eyes on.
