The Battle of Issus occurred in southern Anatolia, in November 333 BC between the Hellenic League led by Alexander the Great and the Achaemenid Empire, led by Darius III, in the second great battle of Alexander’s conquest of Asia.
One of the most important battles of the ancient world is retold here through pieces representing gods and goddesses, ancient structures, and creatures of both Greek and Persian empires in the most beautiful way. The Battle of Issus Chess Set captures this moment of the History. With such attention to the detail, we can say the battle truly comes to life on this breathtaking board, which is itself a spectacular sight to behold.
Alexander the Great and a jewel-encrusted King Darius III are the leaders of the Battle of the Issus Chess Set. Alexander takes the place of the king while the greek goddess of war and wisdom is represented by Athena. King Darius III in the opposite side of the board is together with the Persian god of war, as the queen piece . It was conducted an extensive research on Greek and Persian customs and clothing, antiquities, sculptures, architecture, and texts to make the chess set as historically accurate as possible. Each detail was captured, from the laces of the soldiers’ boots to the arrows in their quivers.
Formed of 14k gold and semiprecious stones, each piece is endowed with mechanical movement, so in terms of both mechanical and aesthetic design, the board is one-of-a-kind in every aspect. The mechanical complexity of the pieces has an important role as the aesthetic design genius. Each single figure triggers a different movement when twisted. For example, Alexander can lower his sword and the archers can tense their bows. This historical moment was taken from one of the most important ancient battles and it truly comes alive in front of our eyes.
The chess table is as remarkable as the chess pieces with the sides of the board whiche are formed from pure silver and the squares of the board are crafted of pink rhodonite and green malachite to match the bases of each piece. The total price of this piece is $1.65, Million.
As we can see in the website of Rau Antiques, it was not an easy task to make the exquisite product. The Battle of Issus Chess Set “is a product of over 14,000 man hours over the course of a decade, this sensational chess set is perhaps the most complex and extravagant ever created. In terms of both mechanics and aesthetics, it is one-of-a-kind in every aspect, and a true masterpiece of design.”.
