Design Miami/ Presents Mathieu Lehanneur and Demisch DanantSunday 31 December 2017
Design Miami/ Presents Mathieu Lehanneur and Demisch Danant ⇒ Design Miami/ is the global forum for design. Each fair brings together the most influential collectors, gallerists, designers, curators and critics from around the world in celebration of design culture and commerce. Through the past few weeks, CovetED has brought you the most renowned design galleries present at the event, brands like Fendi, Audi or Louis Vuitton – who featured in this December 2017 edition – and even the winner of the Panerai Design Miami/ Visionary Award. We didn’t want to end this year’s coverage without showcasing the pieces by Mathieu Lehanneur and Demisch Danant, two more of the highlights in the 2017 edition.
Mathieu Lehanneur is a French designer who is on the forefront of the international design scene. He is also one of the few in his generation to use his talents in a variety of areas beyond furniture. Innovatively, he combines design, science, art and technology as poetic-communicative components to achieve maximum welfare for human beings. Air, water, sound and light are his favourite work materials. And the element of water was the inspiration for his Ocean Memories series, exhibited at this year’s Design Miami/.
Alongside Carpenters Workshop Gallery and using a specialized 3D software in liquid effect, Lehanneur has developed Ocean Memories, a collection of tables and benches embodied with the complex geometry of moving water. With the objective of freezing the movements of the water in the stone, the pieces are continuously polished to make the marble as reflective as the ocean. This polished black marble implies relief and deepness, while the bronze is reminiscent of the sun’s warm glow. “We live on a planet where water covers 75% of the surface. The ocean is our origin, and water is our main physiological component. Yet, it is the element that remains the most enigmatic to our civilization”, said Lehanneur. Even though collectors mostly buy his works as art pieces, Mathieu always pays a special attention for their full functionality.

Demisch Danant was founded in 2005 by Suzanne Demisch and Stephane Danant. The gallery specializes in twentieth-century French design with an emphasis on the late 1950s through the 1970s and represents the work of Maria Pergay, Pierre Paulin, Joseph-André Motte, Pierre Guariche, Michel Boyer, Philippon & Lecoq and René-Jean Caillette. The story of Demisch Danant and Design Miami/ go hand-in-hand, as they were both born in 2005. The gallery has accompanied the development of the fair during the last 13 years. “Design Miami/ set the pace for the new design market, there wasn’t a market in the same way. More collectors, more interest, more dealers”, said Suzanne Demisch.
This year, their stand highlight went to the F286 Multimo Seven-Seater Sofa 1969, by Pierre Paulin. With a stainless steel structure, foam stuffing and wood base, the modular system sofa is an extra-long piece, more than eight feet long, in a teal fabric. Although Pierre Paulin has developed other sofas with Demisch Danant, Design Miami/ 2017 was the first time this model was showcased.
