Brompton Design District’s Best Exhibitions at London Design Festival ⇒ London Design Festival is one of the most beloved festivals in the world that seeks to promote innovation and design and, this year, it will take place from 15-23 September. The event hosts a wide variety of events and exhibitions in London’s most prominent locations. One of the best places to visit is the Brompton Design District which for this edition will explore the theme “Material Consequences” and the programme will be curated by the renowned London-based studio, Jane Withers. Today, CovetED will show you a series of temporary exhibits that will be taking precedence in this district, so take a look.

Many design projects will be on display and will have the purpose of questioning and rethinking attitudes in regards to sustainability, materials and waste as well as the necessary shift to a circular economy. These exhibitions will be located across a series of places, including a vacant retail and office block just a stone’s throw from the V&A Museum as well as the Egerton Garden Mews, Cromwell Place Mews, Thurloe Place, among many other places. Now, take a look at 13 exhibitions one should consider seeing during the prestigious festival

In this installation, the studio will explore new aesthetics and the limits of the material demonstrated in the production process in their dirty lab setup for Brompton. Thorugh NAUTAN(tm) – the studio’s most recent material which was created in partnership with scientists from Slovak University of Technology – Crafting Plastics! will challenge negative prejudice around biodegradable materials.

Fernando Laposse will show developments of his Totomoxtle project, a new veneer material for interior surfaces and furniture that harnesses the brilliant spectrum of colour revealed in the husks of native Mexican corn. This project raises awareness about the rapid loss of the original species of corn in today’s globalised world.

The Guilt-Free? space curated by FranklinTill will present a series of immersive and inspirational exhibits exploring if design and material innovation can satisfy our social and environmental conscience, and indeed enable us to live and consume ‘Guilt-free’. The creators of this exhibition aims to provide inspiration and the means for one to navigate the complex sustainable agenda.

‘The Urban Forager’ explores the material story of Nitrous Oxide canisters. Michelle Lowe-Holder has collected a series of items for the past three years and now she will present a mixed media exhibition questioning waste, consumption and materiality.

“Why Materials Matter” is a recently published book. Those who have been featured in this publication will captivate the space having in mind the future of responsibly-designed environments. Ma-tt-er has created a reciprocal exhibition that encourages lounging and learning as well as conversations in their reading room.

#OneLess will present the work of its Design Fellows, selected to develop and design innovative solutions to help ramp-up London’s refill revolution and eliminate plastic bottled water.

London-based design gallery Sigmar and Czech creative collective OKOLO showcase original pieces from the emblematic Hotel Praha in Prague. This exceptional project will explore how valuable materials and craftsmanship are in today’s society and the importance of creating timeless objects. The history, architecture, design and art of this hospitality venue will be the main topics of discussion as well.

Skipping Rocks Lab’s trolley will have a street presence in and around the district, serving their ‘edible water’ and algae packaged cocktail bites, a material development intended to reduce single-use plastic and make packaging disappear.

Stitch by Stitch creates handmade textiles made in India and Nepal and is driven by sustainable practice and preserving the livelihoods of skilled artisans. The exhibition will highlight the Khamir Kala Cotton Initiative, which is a reinterpretation of an old craft value chain reconfigured for the modern marketplace.

Studio8Fold’s installation will showcase a collection of one month’s worth of waste of about 14 people, excluding any food waste. The vastness of waste amassed in this short period will be a demonstration of the impact that consumerism has on our planet.

Established by Jane Withers and Charles Asprey, the London Fountain Co. will present a prototype for a new drinking water fountain designed by Michael Anastassiades. Thurloe Place will be the location for the first permanent fountain. This project seeks to revive the drinking water fountain in an effort to shift from the use of plastic bottles.

Bang & Olufsen will present a unique sound installation to celebrate the launch of its new audio product. A top name in the industry that is yet to be announced is expected to collaborate in this exhibition. Music and design lovers can head over to the space all week, or stop by on Thursday evening for a special champagne reception.
8 Egerton Garden Mews, SW3 2EH
Seventeen RCA graduates will present the “Horror Show” having Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as the main source of inspiration. The exhibited projects will investigate and bring new meanings to topics ranging from artificial intelligence, hacking, and emergent technologies.
As a whole, the Brompton Design District will be a source of encouragement for one to truly understand how design can alter the meaning and value of everyday life. It is a global platform for emerging designers to further showcase their potential and elevate the energy and dynamism of the district.
