David Rockwell was the founder Rockwell Group in 1984 in New York city. Now he works with Shawn Sullivan, his Partner, and Studio Leader. Over the past 30 years, Rockwell Group has played a unique role developing multiple ideas, design styles, and project types. The design studio creates unique sets for each project, which can range from restaurants, hotels, airport terminals, and hospitals, to residences, festivals, museum exhibitions, and Broadway sets.
Rockwell Unscripted for Knoll is the new furniture collection from Rockwell Group and it reflects the brand’s signature. The collection is divided and composed of six different categories, including borders, steps, tables, seating, storage, and accessories.
Rockwell Group’s works include the interiors of Nobu and W Hotels, Mohegan Sun Casino, the scenery for the Broadway musical Hairspray, the high-modern sets for Team America: World Police, and the interiors of OMNIA nightclub at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
AD choose two main works by the renown studio which are the interiors of Nobu Hotel and the New Union Square Cafe in New York, which reflect the philosophy of Rockwell Group with innovation, creativity, and sophistication.
“The best restaurant designs are made up of large decisions and lots of tiny details. But ultimately, what comes from long experience, Danny’s and mine, involves what I’d call ‘in between’ things: Designing for when a restaurant isn’t full. Ensuring there’s easy eye contact from every table with the waiters’ stations, so diners feel they’re always in control, never swallowed up in a big space. Designing spaces so people want to explore the room because a restaurant shouldn’t be a one-liner,” said Mr. Rockwell.
“A restaurant should unfold, like a series of snapshots,” added Mr. Rockwell. “That was part of what defined the original Union Square Cafe. It was episodic.”
The collaboration between chef Nobu Matsuhisa, actor Robert De Niro, restaurateur Meir Teper, and Rockwell Group, result in a hotel that is an extension of the history and meticulous craft present in the Nobu name.
The design follows the rigor and the elegance of Asian simplicity to balance the normal setting of Las Vegas. The interiors are lined in a wood of high quality and a jewelry box entrance contains a gem like check-in desk.
“At Nobu Villa, a new minimal luxury redefines the traditional Vegas suite,” said Shawn Sullivan.
The Rockwell Group counts with numerous honors, including the 2008 National Design Award by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum; the 2009 Pratt Legends Award; the Presidential Design Award for his amazing renovation of the Grand Central Terminal; three Tony Award nominations for Best Scenic Design; four Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Scenic Design of a Musical.
Along with that, Rockwell Group was twice named by Fast Company as one of the most innovative design studios to integrate their annual top World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies.
