We previously explored in detail the Influences and Styles of some of the most renowned Interior Designers and Architects in New York, Italy and London. Today we’ll continue to explore the Top Interior Designers in the world and, once again, will focus on their Markets and Styles!
We start our exposition with one of the most important markets in the world: North-America! In this section, we’ll focus on 10 popular and high-demand Interior Designers and Architects that are on the Top of this Market. We’ll start with two icons of North American Design: Peter Marino and Bunny Williams.

As we’ve told you before, Peter Marino is one of the historical names of North-American and New York’s Interior Design. He founded in 1978 in New York City the Peter Marino Architect PLLC, an internationally acclaimed architecture, planning and design studio that also has several offices around the United States of America in major cities like Philadelphia or Miami. He follows a stunning and powerful modern contemporary style that can be seen in projects around the world.

The grand Bunny Williams is one of the Great Interior Designers of North America! She opened her interior design company in 1988, after over 20 years of working for a decorating studio Parish-Hadley Associates. Since launching her Solo Career, Bunny has also launched a collection of furniture and accessories known as Bunny Williams Home, but it’s in the Luxury Interior Design World that Bunny exceeds expectations and her amazing skills are showcased! We just love Bunny Willam’s classical style and all-American touch that she delivers to every single one of her projects!

Moving on to two of the most promising and popular interior designers of the New York Design Scene: Jonathan Adler and Ryan Korban ! Adler is a potter, designer, and author whose design inspirations have mainly come from the Mid-Century Modern Style! He’s also an Art and Global Pop lover. He includes his passion for culture, craftsmanship and mid-century in his projects, including the ones in New York. In addition to designing furniture and product, as well as producing some stellar interior designs, Adler has also collaborated with other brands.

Ryan Korban is, currently, one of the most In-Vogue Interior Designers of the Moment in New York and the United States of America. In the past few years, Korban jumped to the spotlight of the Design Industry and, since his luxury debut, his work and style have been making headlines on the Top Design Magazines of the Planet! Without any formal training, Korban developed his unique aesthetic, characterized by a mix of luxury, old-world romance, and urban cool! From Los Angeles, the City of Angeles, we stand out four amazing and popular interior designers that are known for their contemporary style and the excellent use of colour in their projects: Kelly Wearstler, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Nate Berkus and Marmol Radziner! Nicknamed the Color Queen of the US Interior Design Industry, Kelly Wearstler is one of the most popular and prestigious North-American contemporary interior designers out there. Even though she’s considered an all-around interior designer, the truth is that she tends to favour more modern, elegant and refreshing pieces and colour palates to complete her amazing and well focus design vision that focuses on amazing and modern styles!

If Wearstler is the Color Queen of US Design, then Martyn Lawrence Bullard is the King. He is a multi-award-winning Los Angeles based interior designer and is renowned for his broad range of styles and eclectic, yet sophisticated and always inviting interiors. Martyn has been consistently named as one of the world’s top 100 interior designers by the top magazines in the world and his colourful style, eclectic designs and modern deco style are just as unique as he is.

If you are a fan of Oprah, then you know Nate Berkus! He jumped to fame with his appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show and, since then, he gained worldwide notoriety. He currently runs the Chicago interior design firm Nate Berkus Associates, but he has also released numerous lines of products and authored several books. His personal design style is characterized by a mix of vintage American and contemporary classic styles!

We could’ leave LA without talking of Marmol Radziner Studio. This is a design-build practice founded and led by architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner. The firm offers a full range of design services, including architectural design, programming, master planning, historic restoration, landscape design, interior design, and furniture design. This amazing studio specializes in residential, restoration, multifamily, commercial, retail, hospitality, educational, and community projects.

Speaking of Architects let us explore as well some of the Top US Architects! Also based in LA we have HBA/Hirsch Bedner Associates, an international hospitality design firm headquartered in Santa Monica, California. Leading the hotel design industry since 1965, HBA is the largest hospitality design firm in the world and remains deeply concerned about the pulse of changing industry trends, which is governed by today’s sophisticated traveller. HBA’s international presence and depth of experience enable them to identify interior design trends at their source, make predictions about new directions and influence design standards worldwide.

Next to HBA in importance and popularity within the US we have the iconic Rockwell Group. Founded in New York in 1984 by one of the top interior designers and architects David Rockwell, the Rockwell Group creates the most extraordinary designs all around the world. The group employs over 250 people with offices in New York, Madrid and Shanghai, and it specializes their professional range in a wide array of work from luxury hospitality, cultural, and healthcare projects, to educational, product, and set design. A masterful example of luxury architecture!

We’ve started this section by exploring two legends of the interior design industry, so it’s fitting we also explore the basis of one of the biggest living architectural legends of this market: Frank Gehry! This award-winning architect has spent more than a half-century meddling the very essence of design within the architecture industry. All in all, Gehry designed and projected more than two hundred iconic buildings worldwide. Amongst them, we can highlight the iconic Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao in Spain or the Foundation Louis Vuitton in Paris, France.
Next to the US, France is another pivotal market of the Interior Design Industry. Home to some of the top Luxury Bands and Designers, France has a huge variety of top and popular interior designers that helped shape the industry. One of those top designers was Alberto Pinto, one of the most iconic French Designers of all time that died in 2012. His legacy was kept alive by his studio, Alberto Pinto Studio, that till this day is considered one of the most prominent design studios of Europe.

Another top name of French and European Design include the iconic India Mahdavi, Phillipe Starck, Jean Nouvel, Jean Louis Deniot and Patrick Jouin. Mahdavi, for instance, is one of the Most Popular Designers of the entire Industry. Architect, Designer and Scenographer, Mahdavi is the perfect example of the Empowering Women Movement! Mahdavi managed to overcome her complex past in Iran and managed to showcase her natural talent in France! By doing so, she became one of the most successful Female Interior Designers of France and the World! She loves using colour in her modern projects and that’s why she’s dubbed the Color Queen of the Design World!

Internationally acclaimed French creator, designer and architect, Philippe Starck is an untiring and rebellious citizen of the world, who considers it his duty to share his ethical and subversive vision of a fairer planet. He’s known for creating unconventional places and objects whose purpose is to be “good” before being beautiful. No wonder, Starck is considered a top designer and, most of all, a top influencer! The same goes for the iconic Patrick Jouin, a designer whose creativity finds expression in industrial design for the decorative arts. Having worked with top manufacturers Cassina, Kartell, Alessi, Puiforcat, JC Decaux or Fermob in exceptional projects, Patrick found a place in the landscape of international design where only a few know how to evolve with both ease and strength as he does.

We’ve previously talked about some top Italian Interior Designers at CovetED, namely, we’ve talked about the influences that great and legendary interior designers Gio Ponti or Alessandro Mendini had on the work of some top Italian Designers of today, namely the Dimore Studio and Antonio Citterio. These two giants of Italian Design are clearly two of the most prominent Italian Names of the Design Industry and are definitely extraordinary examples of a Modern an Elegant style that puts the Classic Italian Style into good use.

Joining a powerful presence within the Design industry, Italy has also a powerful presence within the Architectural Industry. Gio Ponti, Aldo Rossi, Carlo Scarpa or Giuseppe Pagano are just a few examples of the 20th Century Architectural Legends that helped put Italy on the Architectural map! We easily associate them to several high-end projects and the introduction of several new techniques and designs that revolutionized the field. Those legends influenced the careers and the work of some of the most prolific and prominent Contemporary Architects of today’s Italy, like Renzo Piano or Piero Lissoni.

Another heavyweight country of the Architecture Industry is the United Kingdom. We can’t talk about major Influences for the Architectural Industry without talking of Zaha Hadid, a legendary architect that, unfortunately, passed away in 2016.

A proof of Hadid’s power, talent and influence happened in 2004, when she became the first female recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, an equivalent to the Nobel Prize! Her complete career clearly demonstrates the merit of this and other triumphs, because no one knew how to design a building quite like Hadid! Her buildings are distinctively neo-futuristic, characterised by the “powerful, curving forms of her elongated structures with multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry to evoke the chaos of modern life”. Her buildings and her legacy will live one thanks to the work that’s currently being elaborated by her former studio: Zaha Hadid Architects.

David Chipperfield is another Legend of the British World of Architecture. Next to Hadid, Chipperfield is an icon of Modern British Architectural Style. Since the foundation of his own studio in 1985. Head Architect David Chipperfield developed a diverse international body of work including cultural, residential, commercial, leisure and city projects, as well as master planning exercises. This practice has won more than 100 international awards and citations for design excellence, including Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Royal Fine Art Commission (RFAC) and American Institute of Architects (AIA) awards, as well as the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2007, and the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award in 2011.

We couldn’t end this British presentation without mentioning Kelly Hoppen and Tom Dixon! They are like the Queen and King of British Interior Design and their amazing, elegant and powerful work speaks for them. With a strong background in British Style and Design, both Hoppen and Dixon managed to revolutionize the entire Design Industry in Great Britain and presented British Design Lovers with some amazing design examples and projects that perfectly showcase their creativity.
If you live in India or ever visited India, then you probably heard of one of the biggest Interior Design Sensations of the recent years: Twinkle Khanna.

She’s an author, newspaper columnist, film producer, former film actress and interior designer that’s considered one of the biggest Indian Influences within the Design Industry! After leaving the acting business, Khanna ventured into interior designing and, currently, is the co-owner of The White Window, a chain of interior designing stores which operates in Mumbai. Even though she doesn’t have a professional degree and learned the design skills required by working with an architect for two years, Khanna is enjoying quite a success in this industry and, in recent years, has produced a wide range of spectacular design projects,

But when we talk about Design and Architecture in Asia we usually think of bigger contemporary names with more credits worldwide. Names like Ptang Studio or Ab Concept. These two architectural studios have been presenting some major Architectural Projects in Asia and are paving the way for the New Generation of Asian Architects and New Asian Styles.

Even though the future belongs to top creators like Ptang or AB Concept, we mustn’t forget the past and the legends that helped grow the Asian Design Industry. One of those legends is the famous Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Known worldwide as a Master Creator, Tadao Ando is a self-taught architect whose approach to architecture and landscape was categorized by architectural historian Francesco Dal Co as “critical regionalism”. Truth be told, Ando is the perfect example of Cultural Architectural because the simplicity of his architecture emphasizes the concept of sensation and physical experiences that are influenced by the Japanese and Asian culture.
Central & South America
The Campana Brothers (Humberto Campana and Fernando Campana) are two Brazilian Designers that, together, founded the world-renowned Estudio Campana. They are the proud and glory of the Brazilian Interior Design Industry and in their Projects and Products, the Campana use their Brazilian roots to create some design magic!

Mexico also has a powerful list of grand Designers and Architects that helped shaped the Culture of Design in the Americas. The late and iconic designer Luis Barragan is clearly one of the most famous names of the Mexican Design History. His unique style and passion for Mexican craftsmanship transformed him in a Legend of Mexican Design and, till this day, his projects and legacy are used of powerful and positive examples for new designers. One of the many designers that got inspired by Barragan’s legacy is Emiliano Godoy. With a strong ethical stance, Emiliano Godoy’s designs focus on environmental and social products. He uses design as a tool with which he develops new products and practices that can be more sustainable for the future, but always with the concern of including the spirit of Mexican Design’s History to every single one of his products!

We’ve talked about Italian, French and British designers, but the entire European Union is, in fact, a Top Market for the Design Industry. Within the EU Borders, we can find some of the most amazing Designers and Architects in the world. For instance, in the Netherlands, we find 2 of the biggest names of today’s Design Industry: Piet Boon and Marcel Wanders.

Piet Boon is one of the most relevant and iconic designers of our time and belongs to the list of the most famous Dutch architects and interior designers of all time. Together with a creative director Karin Meyn, Piet leads his own team at the Piet Boom Studio that, in the past few years, was responsible for some of the most exquisite projects in the Netherlands! If Boon is part of the Dutch Design Hall of Fame, then what can we say about Marcel Wanders. He’s without a doubt an admired product designer that’s regarded by many as a unique design force in the design world. He has made it his personal mission to “create an environment of love, live with passion and make our most exciting dreams come true” and we can say that his accomplishing it! His work excites, provokes, and polarises, but never fails to surprise for its ingenuity, daring and singular quest to uplift the human spirit, and entertain.

In Spain, we can also find two stunning examples of EU Design Royalty: Santiago Calatrava and Patricia Urquiola! Calatrava is one of Spain’s Top Architects and it’s safe to say that the entire collection of his work can easily distinguish itself as innovative and creative. His work has a unique signature, but here are some projects that we can definitely point out as some of the most iconic projects of Calatrava’s extense portefólio, namely the WTC Transportation HUB in New York or the Montjuic Communications Tower in Barcelona.

Another top name form Spain’s Design Scene is Patricia Urquiola. She’s a famous interior designer, architect and designer that is known internationally by her great designs that are suitable for so many projects. She also works a lot with known furniture companies such as Molteni, Moroso or Boffi and, in recent years, she contributed to the Design World with some revolutionary design ideas.

Within the Architecture Industry, we must also highlight Portugal’s Alvaro Siza Viera, Denmark’s Bjarke Ingels and Poland’s Daniel Libeskind! These three iconic Architects are known worldwide for the quality of their work and they are amongst the most recognizes and popular architects of the world.
