An Interview With Artist Hugo Sousa at Maison et Objet 2019 ⇒ Covet Foundation is a tribute to all makers for their wisdom, storytelling, and for building history with beautiful creations through ancient techniques and raw materials. The foundation stands up for the ones that keep the art of craftsmanship alive. A true desire to reveal the process as a peer of the finished product itself. Such a project couldn’t afford not to be present at Maison et Objet, so we took the opportunity to speak with Hugo Sousa, a fine painting artist who works every day to elevate his art to the highest level.

In a rather poetic sense, Hugo described art as being his path. Ever since he was a young high schooler, art was the manifestation of his true calling. Even though he started in graphic design, he discovered that his true passion lied in the fine arts.
‘’My art is a path. It is a path that started at Soares dos Reis Art School, in Porto, where I studied graphic arts. At that point, it felt like that was my calling. Meanwhile, I was accepted at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, and my work stopped being graphical, and became more poetic, so to speak.’’
Art is not something that can be projected. The true beauty of art is the underlining abstract concept that is easily interpreted in a million different ways by a million different people. And that translates a lot into the artist’s work.
‘’It depends a lot on the projects. Right now, I’m working for the Culture Project, where my work meets their needs. The main goal is to produce unique furniture pieces that separate themselves from the others. In the future, we’d like to use fine painting’s past and create more unique, contemporary furniture pieces. ‘’
We couldn’t miss the opportunity to understand a little bit more about the Culture Project. For Hugo, this creative hub allows master artisans, plastic artists and designers to work together, searching for new artistic ways to express themselves and create beautiful and handcrafted designs.
‘’Nationally speaking, the Culture Project is one of a kind. It is a project that vows to bring together artists with craftsmen and designers, ultimately creating a completely different design segment. These areas should never be apart from one another. There’s important knowledge to be shared. ‘’
We ended up our conversation ultimately discussing the union between the designer, the craftsmen and the artist. Unfortunately, this fortunate alliance is often forgotten by the major players in the business. But fortunately, like Fyodor Dostoevsky once said, the darker the night the brighter the stars.
