The Tailored Dramatic Beauty Of Phantom ThreadThursday 25 January 2018
The Tailored Dramatic Beauty Of Phantom Thread – The 90th Edition of the Oscars – The Awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of The United States of America will be held on the 4th of March in the Dolby Theather in Los Angeles. One of the films nominated for this years Academy Awards is the stunning and elegant drama “Phantom Thread”, a film by famous director Paul Thomas Anderson that will go down in history as the final role of superb actor Daniel Day-Lewis.
In 2017, Daniel Day-Lewis announced that “Phantom Thread” would be his last film. This famed British actor won the Oscar of Best Ator for three occasions thanks to his talented and sublime roles on “There Will Be Blood”, “Lincoln” and “My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown“. On the 4th of March, he may win the 4th Oscar of Leading Actor of his career, because he is one of the five nominees in this category.
His nomination is more than fair. In “Phantom Thread”, Day-Lewis plays the role of fictional renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock, one of the top fashion designers of the glamorous 1950’s era in post-war London. Woodcock is at the centre of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman called Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover.
This is a story of love, fashion, elegance, drama and loss that’s amazing to watch. The performance of Day-Lewis is astonishing and proves he is one of the top actors of his generation. We don´t know if he can surpass his fellow British actor Gary Oldman in the Oscar race, but the truth is that it would be more than fair if he retired with one more Oscar under his belt.
He interprets his character with method, elegance and brilliance and he helps transform this admirable movie into one of the most celebrated and ethereal films of 2017! The rest of the cast also has powerful roles, namely female actresses Lesley Manville and Vicky Krieps.
The movie itself transcends it’s three main themes: romance, drama and fashion. It’s a film about life, love and sadness that mixes a powerful narrative with an elegant and polish visual commanded by illustrious director Paul Thomas Anderson.
As expected, fashion also plays an important role in “Phantom Thread”. It’s not a fashion picture per say, but is of the utmost importance for the narrative and provides it with some of the chicest and luxurious details. The wardrobe of the movie is spectacular and fully represents the 1950’s era. The striking images that represent the creative process of the Main Caracter and the wonderful sequences that represent the creation of dress are impressive.
If you haven’t watch it yet, we at CovetED fully recommend this film that combines three things we absolutely love: Fashion, Creativity and, of course, Daniel Day-Lewis. Give it a try before the Oscar Ceremony!
